3 hospitalized after fight at New Year's Eve party at Ann Arbor warehouse
- Update: Ann Arbor property manager: New Year's Eve party organizers did what they could to stop fight
Three men ended up in the hospital after a New Year's Eve party brawl at an Ann Arbor warehouse, police said.
Ann Arbor police were first dispatched to a warehouse in the 1200 block of North Main Street for reports of a fight in the early morning hours Tuesday, said police Lt. Renee Bush.
"It appeared to be a warehouse party," Bush said.
There did not appear to be a fight in progress, however. The party was breaking up and people were leaving. No one came forward to provide any information, police said.
Then at 1:41 a.m., police received a call from St. Joseph Mercy Hospital regarding two men seeking treatment for lacerations. The men told police they were involved in a large fight inside a building located in the 1200 block of North Main Street that spilled outside.
One of the victims, an 18-year-old Ypsilanti man, said he was knocked to the ground and hit by multiple people, but he said he did not get a clear look at any of them. The man didn't realize until after he fled from the fight and joined two friends in a car that he'd been cut in the leg and near the clavicle. Bush said it's unknown what kind of implement caused the lacerations.
One of the man's friends, a 20-year-old Warren man, was also injured. Police said he had a 1-inch laceration to the shoulder area and laceration to the hand. One of the men drove them both to the hospital, where police were contacted.
A 22-year-old Ann Arbor man also reported injuries from the same warehouse party fight. He was not with the three other men, police said. Police were called to the University of Michigan Hospital emergency room where the man said he had been in a large fight. The man told police he was knocked to the ground and kicked several times by people he did not know.
When the brawl spilled outside, the man said he was struck several times in the face with a bottle. He suffered lacerations on both hands and bruising in the facial area. Police continue to investigate the fight. Bush said all three men have been released from the hospital.

I bet those were some fancy-schmancy invitations that were sent for the warehouse party.

What doesn't add up? It was New Year's Eve - There was a large party - There were attendees who didn't know each other - There was alcohol involved - There was a fight. Sounds pretty normal to me.

But oftentimes, the persons getting their butts kicked have done something to deserve it .... Not saying that is the case here of course ... nor advocating violence of course .... But the life of most 18-20 year olds is just full of learning experiences.

I remember these kinds of big parties at rented vacant places back in my day. Good times. Unless you get your butt kicked then not so much.

18 & 20 year old....I can only assume there was no alcohol involved because these two victims are both under the legal drinking age...and unless there was a special permit pulled to serve alcohol at a warehouse, it should be just some unhappy dancers not getting along...right?

In our day it was "grassers". Much nicer atmosphere than a warehouse. :)

I remember grassers. By my senior year in high school we moved to Arizona. Since there wasn't any grass out there in the desert they were called "boondockers".

This is the exact reason I do not go out on New Years Eve, and St. Patrick's day. I call it amateur hour, meaning it is a large group of people that have no idea what enough to drink is. After consuming too much alcohol they start fights. This is a common occurrence every year.

Police are still investigating the incident. They are looking into all the questions being raised here: who threw the party, did they have a permit, etc. They told me if anyone has information about the party to have them call the AAPD Detective Bureau at (734) 794-6930.

I'm embarrassed to admit I've never heard of a warehouse party, although in my errant youth I partied in bars, apartments, houses, rented rooms, boats, boat houses, mansions, tents, palapas, caves, beaches, and even Canada. But I think I'll stay away from warehouse parties.

Attending a warehouse party isn't conceptually different from the other "types" of places you've partied in. More about the people, or how you stereotype the people who attend these "warehouse parties."

Ok..that's kinda funny.I defend Ypsi all the time, but if it happened in Ypsi I wouldn't be surprised. But I'm glad the combatants didn't whine like little babies and it was the hospital that called the police and I get the impression that the " victims " didn't have much to say. I know there are a lot of hospital employees out there so maybe you can answer a question.Do you have to report a incident like this or is it a judgement call ?

I broke my hand in a similar scenario several years ago. The hospital staff indicated they are obligated to contact the authorities when treating such injuries that may be related to an altercation etc.
