3 home invasions through windows reported Thursday in Ann Arbor

By Kyle Feldscher

Ann Arbor police said three home invasions, two on the same block, were reported Thursday, with the intruders gaining access through windows at each home.

Ann Arbor police Lt. Renee Bush said two residences in the 500 block of North Main Street and a home in the 2900 block of Whittier Court were all victimized by break-ins. All three crimes were reported on Thursday, she said.

The first incident occurred overnight and was reported at 8:10 a.m. Thursday. A 29-year-old Ann Arbor man said he went to bed at 12:30 a.m. and woke up to find a ground-level window was open.

The screen had been cut out of the window and the man’s car keys were stolen. Soon, he discovered his silver 2007 Toyota Rav 4 had been stolen as well.

The Rav 4 has a small dent in a rear trunk door and has a license plate of CJK4317, Bush said.

The second reported home invasion took place between 11:30 p.m. Wednesday and 12:30 a.m. Thursday in the 500 block of North Main Street. The 32-year-old Ann Arbor man who lives in the apartment said he was sitting in his living room listening to his headphones when he noticed a hand reaching through a living room window.

The man shouted out and the hand disappeared. No suspect could be seen and the man reported the incident later that day to Ann Arbor police. Between $75 and $100 in damage was done to the window screen, which had been bent in order for the hand to reach through the open window.

The final incident occurred between 11:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Thursday in the 2900 block of Whittier Court. Bush said the two residents of the home returned and the 27-year-old woman noticed doors were open and a window was broken.

Assorted coins were reported stolen from the house, which had been accessed through a window. Bush said the latch on the window was broken and the window was then forced open.

The coins were the only items reported stolen from the home and there is no suspect description available, Bush said.

Anyone with information on these incidents is encouraged to call the Ann Arbor police anonymous tip line at 734-794-6939.

Did anyone else get a visual image of Thing from the Adams Family when reading about the hand coming through the window? You never know....

Hate to say it but I think A2 is getting to the point where residents -- at least in town -- need to consider bars on the windows and doors ... much like Ypsi and City of Detroit. Eventually, you won't be able to sell or rent an "in town" house without them (bars). It's a slippery slope. Watch those property values! City of Detroit values are back to where they were 50 and 60 years ago. City of Detroit officials and residents were very lackidaisical about the crime issue ... similar to A2 officials and residents today.

I guarantee that the person responsible for these crimes has been in trouble numerous times before. Keeping criminals in prison prevents crime. It's as simple as that.

Misinformation on the Whittaker Court break in. The person in question is a neighbor of ours and she did not discover the break in until she noticed the can of coins missing. Also, they are grateful they did not do harm to the dog n the cage. But the house was a mess. They went thru everything. The one thing we heard from the police is this. Shred the bank statements. This is what they are going after. They took those and checkbooks. The screens were not discovered because the owner did not notice they were slashed. I believe the owner noticed this after calling the police or the police did. Can't remember that one. This house was locked up tighter then a drum They really pried their way into this unit. Just glad no one was home. Just hope the perps get caught. Also, the police have stated that perps will not take I Pads because they have GPS and can be found this way. They took what ever was of value. We wish our neighbors the best of luck. This is the third break in in under a year. Scary.

I pray for the day that one of these home invasions will be met with a homeowner with a shotgun. It would probably be too much to ask that the end result but published far and wide by Ann Arbor (as well as local) rags as examples to all. Again, I can only pray. Now, to which god...?

I cannot agree more with this statement. If you are found inside my home? I will make sure you are the one calling the police. Because with that lap top? It will be considered self defense.

fjord.......I hate to bring reality to you but if you have to pull a gun you use it.Real life is not a movie where you use a gun for intimidation ( good grief I spelled that correctly the first time )

Nice attitude. And to answer your question ... there's no god that would support the bloodlust you exhibit here. The whole idea behind having a gun for protection is to never need to fire it. Announce you have a gun, show it, chamber a round ... and then, ONLY if the intruder keeps coming, do you have any legal basis for actually firing it. You don't get to blow someone away just because they're trying to swipe your laptop.

'Tis the season.....move-ins around town mean opportunity for criminals. Students: keep your stuff locked up, out of sight of windows, and lock your doors and windows. Hire more police! Maybe the artist will take back that public art fountain monstrosity downtown, refund the $750,000 and the city can hire more cops.

No witnesses means they'll prolly get away. Too bad. I wish I would be home when someone invades my apartment. Yay second amendment!

I'm not saying it's right or it's wrong to shoot a burglar, but I really have no sympathy for criminals shot in the course of committing a crime.

The police consider home invasion and a shot to the perp legal self defense. You are protecting yourself and property. The law does protect the home owner to some degree.

The Second Amendment doesn't mean you get to shoot anyone who tries to enter your house. It's called "self-defense," not "big-screen-TV-defense."

There have been a LOT more than the three in this story recently, but I know, like the old rag Ann Arbor news, A2.com likes to focus crime reporting on Ypsi, truth be told here..... http://www.crimemapping.com/map/mi/annarbor

Couldn't be the enormous amount of drug addict vagrants in A2 could it? Why isn't the city hiring more police officers? They can spend spend spend on public art and "affordable" housing but can't keep the residents of the city safe.

I am not sure what you mean by this. But I hate to say it the Detroit Police has the biggest arrest count in the month of August since any time even though their hours are now 12 hours for I think 3 days. With a total of 14 days off. At any rate with the lay off of police in Ann Arbor I think they can do what Detroit is doing. Keeping Detroit safer. Although I don't know about Ann Arbor anymore. I feel safer in Ypsilanti.

The ADT sign is more effective than the system. The perception of a police presence is needed -

Herpaderp. Unless you want to pay for a cop for every block in the city you can't stop this kind of crime. At least one of these was easily preventible by locking a ground floor window.
