2 looking for place to 'hang out' arrested after break-in at abandoned Ann Arbor house

By Kyle Feldscher

A man and a woman were arrested after breaking into an abandoned Ann Arbor home Saturday evening while “looking for a place to hang out,” police said.

Ann Arbor police Lt. Renee Bush said officers were sent at 8:20 p.m. Saturday to the 700 block of North Main Street for a report of a break-in. The intoxicated man had punched out a window in the back of the house and both intruders used a cement block to climb inside, she said.

Officers arrived at the home and were able to see the two people inside, Bush said. The two, 46-year-old woman from Grand Ledge and a 53-year-old Ann Arbor man, were ordered outside and arrested on suspicion of breaking and entering, she said.

One of the intruders told police that the two were just looking for a place to hang out, Bush said. They spent the rest of the night hanging out in a cell at the Ann Arbor Police Department before being released when they had sobered up, Bush said.

The case has been turned over to the department’s detective bureau for more investigation, Bush said. The intruders' names are not being released because they have not been formally charged with any crime.

To: Mohawk, Any who attempt to drive on our Hieftje-hole streets are too busy keeping their car on the road to notice much on the periphery. Keep a perfect ten and two death grip, you literally have your life in your hands!

The map to the article points to Main and Felch streets. During Christmastime, I would make look down Felch Street from Main while it was still dark to see a heavily-Christmas-decorated house on the north side of Felch. Something to see on the periphery.

A squatter is defined as: "a person who settles on land or occupies property without title, right, or payment of rent." I'm quite sure a squatter doesn't have a key to the abandoned home. Did someone leave the light on for them? How else are they going to get in. By breaking and entering. Wouldn't that put a stop to future squatters if they are all arrested for breaking and entering instead of letting them squat there? My understanding is unless Michigan authorities condemned the house for having no running water or working toilet It would be illegal for the owner or others to use or occupy the home because it was condemned. Was this abandoned home condemned? Stand your ground .

Whoever is letting all those houses sit vacant on North Main should be forced to demolish them immediately. Every visitor to our town is greeted by the horrible sight of 7 broken down abandoned houses!

Kind of like some of the rentals on the west side of Ann Arbor. We DO have slum lords in town. Some of them are owned by long time realtors with a well know name.

What's the matter? No home of their own to hang out in? Or couldn't because their parents or roommates where home? Big difference and speaks to actual motives for breaking in. Well at least they weren't driving...

At least they weren't breaking into an occupied house. Sometimes drunk men do that and don't realize that the houses they entered were not their own, and we read their stories in annarbor.com.

Thank you so much for reiterating the ridiculousness of their excuse...

..."46-year-old woman from Grand Ledge and a 53-year-old Ann Arbor man..." I know that a lot has been made out of the "helicopter parent" phenomenon, but I think by the time you hit 46 and 53, your parents probably don't factor much into your decisions about where you spend the night and with whom.
