Cows and horses reported wandering along M-14

By Cindy Heflin

A few cows and horses had a few moments of perilous freedom Friday morning wandering along M-14 on the northeast side of Ann Arbor.

Motorists reported seeing the animals about 8 a.m. on the shoulder of the highway east of the east triple-decker intersection with U.S. 23, a dispatcher with the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office said.

Michigan State Police responded and the animals were rounded up. The incident was over by 8:30 a.m., the dispatcher said.

A woman who answered the phone at the nearby Domino's Petting Farm said they were not escapees from the farm.

I guessed the cows and horses were in the Domino's Farms area before reading that they were. The zebu who was spotted years ago by motorists on M-14 wasn't trying to escape, just looking for his girlfriends. I suspect that some Domino's Farms worker closed a gate and opened another one, which should not have been closed and opened at that time, so the horses and cows were looking for mates, not liking their M-14 surroundings at all. The zebu didn't. I remember that the zebu didn't cause anyone to lose control of his car or get into any collisions, and I trust that these cows and horses didn't cause any accidents either.

Shhh... don't let the local pastors hear about this, or we'll have Camp Take Notice II: The Farm Animals.

I would not be surprised if they read the book Animal Farm. Wonder if they were taking notes.

I recall similar "cattle on road" news in which the reporter noted that the cattle were "named Black and Gus".

@panizora,If something had happened to you or your car, and you were able to identify the owner of the vehicle, Michigan law allows you to go after them for damages.

I almost got hit by a horse running down Ford Rd in that same area a couple of years ago! I couldn't believe my eyes, then realized that my Pontiac Grand Am was likely no match for the horse.
