Counterfeit $10 bill passed at Ypsilanti McDonald's restaurant

By Heidi Fenton

Ypsilanti Police are working with the U.S. Secret Service after a counterfeit $10 bill was passed Sunday in the city.

Sgt. Troy Fulton said an officer was called to the McDonald’s restaurant on Ecorse Road after an employee called and reported a suspicious bill.

An officer arrived and confirmed the employee’s suspicions. The customer, who had sat down to eat, was questioned by police and said he was unaware the bill was counterfeit.

The same situation happened twice recently in Saline, where suspected counterfeit $10 bills were passed at a CVS Pharmacy and at a Dairy Queen.

In both of those situations, customers also said they received the bills unknowingly. Saline Police forwarded both of those cases to the Secret Service office in Detroit.

Fulton said there is no indication the Ypsilanti bill is connected to those passed in Saline. He could not recall any other recent reports of counterfeit bills passed in the city of Ypsilanti.

We now check 10s at work, along with 20s, 50s, 100s. It's crazy. Sometimes the customers are offended that we dare suspect their money is not real. OMG. But what can you do?

Its really too bad that private individuals think that just because the U.S. Government prints money when it needs it that they can do it also.

Why $10's? Less suspicious perhaps, or maybe to change them at bill changers. Maybe it's easier to change a 10 then a 20. most all bill changers take ten's. Not many businesses check 10's. But if they are not showing up at the bank then where are they going too. The reports of fake 10's are showing up across the map, but has any banks reported any?
