Ypsilanti Council Member Pete Murdock considering run for mayor

By Tom Perkins

Ypsilanti City Council Member Pete Murdock, D-3rd Ward, said he is considering a run for mayor.

If he runs, Murdock will challenge Ypsilanti Mayor Paul Schreiber, who has confirmed he is running for re-election.

Murdock declined to discuss whether he had pulled paperwork, but said he is in "an exploratory stage." The deadline for potential candidates is May 11.

Murdock has a long history in Ypsilanti city government, including serving as mayor from 1982-89 and five elected terms as a council member. He has also served on numerous city committees.

Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't Pete the in the 80s that was SOOOO bad that he ran through staff like water and the city was such a mess that they voted for a Republican for the first time instead of making that mistake again.

The mayor came to my house asking me to sign his petition and said Pete Murdock would eliminate the historic district if he was elected. I asked Paul what accomplishment he was most proud of as mayor and he couldn't think of anything. I signed his petition anyway because I felt bad for him.

If Murdock runs, does Screiber have to campaign? I mean, is there a requirement?

I wish Bob Doyle would run for Mayor. He has vast planning and business experience, and is an honest and honorable man in the community. Oh wait, honest and honorable won't get you elected in Ypsilanti, just look at Trudy Swanson-Whatever and Lois Richardson! ypsidog Ward # 1 victim

Pete Murdock for mayor. Seems like an old recycle movie that has lost its charm. The voters of Ypsilanti deserves better. While I'm not sure that Shrieber is the man, Murdock time has come and gone. Since he needs to be involved in politics, send him on to the County Board of Commissioners where he can pretend he is a leader. As a matter of fact, he and Lois Richardson, who has mayoral aspiration also, both need to be on the Board of Commissioners. In that way, voters will have them out of Ypsilanti politics and they can mettle more in Ann Arbor politics which both are suited for. The current members on the BOC for Ypsilanti does a poor job of representing their constituencies in Ypsilanti and thus Murdock and Richardson would be at home on the BOC.
