Closing statements from Saturday's Ann Arbor City Council candidate forum

By Ryan J. Stanton

The Ann Arbor Democratic Party hosted a political forum Saturday featuring all eight candidates in four contested races for the Ann Arbor City Council.

In the 1st Ward, Eric Sturgis is competing against Sumi Kailasapathy, a certified public accountant, for the open seat being vacated by Sandi Smith.

In the 2nd Ward, Tony Derezinski is defending his seat against Sally Hart Petersen, who is asking voters to look to her business and marketing experience.

In the 4th Ward, Margie Teall is defending her seat against Jack Eaton, a labor attorney who argues the city has its spending priorities out of whack.

In the 5th Ward, Chuck Warpehoski is facing off against Vivienne Armentrout, a former Washtenaw County commissioner, for the open seat being vacated by Carsten Hohnke.

All eight are Democrats who will appear on the Aug. 7 primary ballot. Here are their closing statements from Saturday's forum:

Tony D. deserves to be fired. He has done nothing! Why does he even want this? Sally seems like a good candidate.

What happened to the love of diversity in A2? I see no black candidates aspiring to to move into the political elite status in A2. One would hope a task force is convened immediately to study why A2 blacks seem left out of the political process.

Good videos, I'd like to see the full debate on here though.

Someone from the party taped it and they said it will run on CTN. Not sure when, though.

I would like to add my thanks to annarbor.com for the videos of candidates' closing statements. They are very helpful in demonstrating some of the differences between the candidates. The stories on this council election have been well done over all. I just wish more Ann Arbor people could see them.

I am grateful to all the candidates for stepping up to help serve the residents of the city. I imagine it is a difficult, time-consuming, and often thankless job. Thank you for your willingness and dedication to Ann Arbor!

I just love the "ONE PARTY" Rule in Ann Arbor! You get such Diversity and Creativity! It reminds me of "Mind Numb Robots" who are waiting for marching orders this November!

Its obvious in these videos that Sally P has a organized game plain..... Tony D claims he is "seasoned" at the State Level and City Level, he has done lots of hard work for the Stat of Michigan and the City of Ann Arbor......Tony do you think you have done a good job with the State of Michigan, I don't know if anyone has told you , Michigan is in horrible shape! Once again if you would have done your discovery you would have realized this, maybe you skipped that Discovery class at Harvard Law..... Things are so bad it seems that you are crying, for the democratic vote........ I forecast landslide win.....Sally P
