By Cindy Heflin

Update: Fatal crash on I-94 near Chelsea remains under investigation

Update: Man killed in crash on I-94 identified

One person was killed and two others were injured in a crash Wednesday night on the on-ramp from Pierce Road to westbound Interstate 94 near Chelsea, Jim Payeur, Chelsea Area Fire Authority chief, said.

The one-car crash occurred about 9:30 p.m., Payeur said. One person was pronounced dead at the scene, and two people were taken by Huron Valley Ambulance to the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor, he said.

State police were still at the scene of the accident investigating about 11 p.m.

He could not provide any information about the accident victims or about what might have caused the crash, but he said two other crashes occurred in the same general area shortly after the first crash. He said some bridges and overpasses had become slippery as a result of freezing temperatures, but he did not know if the crashes were weather related.

Yeah, I was driving on 23 around 9:00 that night too and there were definitely some icy patches.Again, that's why it's so important to buckle up. You can't always count on the roads to be dry.

I was returning home through this area last night on I-94 eastbound and reached the Pierce Rd/Old US 12. exit around 10:00 pm. Shortly before exiting I had slowed WAY down for the S-curve between Kalmbach and Pierce because I was worried about the road conditions. Indeed, as I came out of the final curve, my car suddenly started shimmying. Luckily I was only going about 55 mph and I just coasted down the hill to the off-ramp. I saw all the emergency vehicles and wondered what was going on. I figured it had to be bad, but I am sorry to hear how bad.

Cindy If you get any more information on this story would you please post it? For instance, maybe WCRC could tell you if they got a call for a salt truck to that ramp. It's odd to hear of a fatal with one vehicle on a ramp unless it was ice related. Thanks.

Thanks Cinnabar...actually I wasn't going anywhere...LOL...but I wondered what the heck happened. In a follow up article Lee mentions speed being a factor. The post below does make it sound like things iced up. I'd imagine that happened quickly they way the temps bottomed out.
