Beginning either Tuesday or Wednesday, night road construction work is expected to begin on M-52 in the Southtown area of Chelsea as part of the Michigan Department of Transportation road resurfacing project.

All lanes of M-52 traffic will open south of Interstate 94, and the temporary traffic signal will be no longer in use, according to an update from the Chelsea Area Chamber of Commerce.

MDOT is resurfacing about a mile of M-52 from the I-94 interchange north to Old US-12. The about $4 million project includes ramp reconstruction at the interchange, utility upgrades, and curb and gutter and sidewalk installation.

As part of the project, the ramps at I-94 and M-52 will be reconfigured.

However, once the night work begins, along the east side of M-52, north of I-94, traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m.

Included in the night work is the removal of curb and gutter and partial driveways, which will be replaced with a temporary asphalt surface. Access to the driveways will be maintained at all times.

M-52 will be open on all lanes from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m.

However, during center-turn lane resurfacing in this location, southbound M-52 traffic will be detoured overnight between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m.

During an informational meeting hosted by MDOT about the project, officials said that eastbound Old US-12 will have short-term detours in place during work at the Old US-12/M-52 intersection.

Construction is expected to last through the fall on the 1.1 mile stretch of road, Kari Arend, MDOT communications representative for the University Region, said previously.
