C&I Dismantling is removing asbestos from the contaminated site, and demolition of the building will follow, according to the report.

Papo's Magellan Properties of Ann Arbor owns the property, which could be offered for sale once cleanup and demolition is complete by February or March, the Standard said.

The Downtown Development Authority has targeted the Federal Screw Works building as a prime location for redevelopment. The site was one of five vacant or underutilized properties that consultants focused on last year while determining a strategic plan for downtown. The other sites included the former auto dealership Palmer Ford, the Clocktower, the Longworth buildings and several downtown parking lots and alleyways.

Demolition on the Daniels Showroom portion of the Longworth Property started in October.
