Chelsea's Las Fuentes gets city OK for outdoor seating; state approval is next step

Las Fuentes, Chelsea’s popular Mexican restaurant in the Clocktower complex, was given unanimous approval for outdoor seating by the City Council Tuesday night.

The restaurant, which is located along M-52, must now get a sidewalk cafe permit from the Michigan Department of Transportation, but the first step was getting council approval.

Christine Linfield, city zoning director, said the state requires a resolution of support from the city for sidewalk cafes in the public right-of-way. In addition, the city must agree to enforce compliance with all American with Disabilities Act requirements among other conditions.

The city accepted responsibility for investigating any complaints and agreed to make sure that the cafe does not stray from the dining design diagram that was sent to the state.

The applicant must also comply with eight conditions for the permit, which include compliance with Michigan Liquor Control Commission requirements. Also, no additional signage, lighting or advertisements can be added outside.

The restaurant must also use a color scheme that is compatible with the existing building architecture.

“Years ago,” Linfield said, “MDOT did not allow outdoor cafes. I’m pleased that they are now allowing this.”

Las Fuentes will have to apply for a new permit from the state each year, and it's expected that the state will give approval for the request in the next few weeks, city officials said.

Our first visit my waitress Carmen greeted us with a welcome. Our second visit we were welcomed back. Our third and every visit since, Carmen tells us "welcome home". How's that for a greeting!! We frequent Las Fuentes at least twice a month and have tried a variety of the menu items. We love the atmosphere and the super service including the speed the food is brought out. Thank you Las Fuentes, thank you Carmen. Today she even gave us a hug on our way in and our way out. Cant say enough.

Eighty Sevens idea of good Mexican food is Toco Bell. If you ever get to go to Mexico you will know what real food tastes like! This is one of the best in the area and compares with the good ones in Mexican town down in Detroit. you just have to know what to order! Keep up the good work guys we all love it!

"Chelsea's popular Mexican restaurant" is a little misleading it is the only Mexican restaurant in town. Been there and it is mediocore at best.

I respectfully disagree. It is much better than mediocre; I don't think I can name 4 places I like better in the Ann Arbor area. I can probably name 2 or 3, but that doesn't take away from the fact that Las Fuentes is quite good. Chelsea has a dearth of restaurants with outdoor seating, glad to see Las Fuentes looking to change that.
