Chelsea community leader and business owner Joseph Merkel dies at 66

Former Chelsea village council member Joseph Merkel died Friday at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, according to a report in the Chelsea Update. Merkel, who also owned Wolverine Food & Spirits, was 66 years old.

Many Chelsea community leaders recalled Merkel’s involvement in the community and commitment to helping others.

Burial Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, Jan. 23 at St. Mary Catholic Church at 11 a.m.

Mr Merkel will be missed. He was a generous supporter of the community. Often catering charitable community events.
