Chelsea City Council election: 3 open seats and no one's filed petitions to run

By Lisa Allmendinger

What happens if a city holds a council election, there are three open seats, and no one files petitions to run for office? There are three seats up for grabs on the Chelsea City Council and as of this afternoon, none of the incumbents have filed their paperwork.

No newcomers have taken out petitions, either.

With a little more than two weeks to go before the deadline to file petitions, City Clerk Terri Royal said incumbents Rod Anderson, Bill Holmberg and Kent Martinez-Kratz have the paperwork in hand but none of them have filed.

Anderson said he plans to make a decision about whether he’ll run next week.

Holmberg said he plans to file, but hasn’t done so yet.

Martinez-Kratz hasn’t said he won’t decide for another week; that he's discussing it with his family.

Royal says she’s never seen this happen before, and if none of them file, write-in candidates have until the Friday prior to the election to file.

“Hopefully, someone will run,” she said via e-mail.

Chelsea will get the government it deserves if local folks don't step up! This is not a good sign in a community we have been considering as a place to relocate.
