Chelsea Police Chief Ed Toth told the City Council on Tuesday night that the department is still looking for a man who was caught on a surveillance camera breaking into Biggby Coffee earlier this week.

“We’ve gotten a couple of tips,” he said, “But they haven’t panned out.”

The break-in occurred about midnight Sunday.

The man “tried to pry open the back door with a crowbar,” Toth said, and when that didn’t work, he broke a window on the west side of the building.

Less than $500 was taken from a cash drawer.

“This is unusual for the city,” he said. “It’s priority No. 1 for this police department.”

Cameras in the store at 1171 S. Main St. got a photo of the suspect, who is described as a white male, 30-40 years old, with a heavy muscular build and curly reddish brown hair.

He was wearing a medium green polo shirt, tan khaki cargo shorts and white tennis shoes.

Toth said he was driving either a light blue or silver-colored four-door sedan.

Police were alerted to the break-in by a store alarm, he said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Chelsea Police at 734-475-9122 or Crime Stoppers at 800-773-2587. Calls will remain anonymous and a reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest.
