Boy falls in hole in Ann Arbor and is hoisted out with crane
Heather Lockwood | AnnArbor.com
The boy was not injured in the 1:45 p.m. incident, Battalion Chief Amy Brow said.
The accident occurred near the construction site of the underground parking structure being built between Fifth Avenue and Division streets.
Brow said the boy was walking with his father when he stepped on a soft spot in the soil and fell in the hole. Firefighters and police responded after someone called 911.
The boy was given a harness that he attached to himself and was pulled out, Brow said. He was in the hole for about 10 minutes.

But boys will be boys, and no matter what kind/lack of supervision they might have had, you can't have eyes in the back of your head and these sorts of things will happen. Sounds like all's well that ends well. I was hoping that perhaps this might story might have been about someone falling into the holes in the Stadium Bridges that might finally lead to it's closure before someone gets seriously hurt.

Just to clarify -- I don't have kids, I don't care about kids, I go out of my way to avoid kids, and I certainly don't care what happens to your kids....but I also know enough about psychology to know that your not going to "control" boys at certain ages, hence the comment.

Adults should watch their children. sitting in a car while your kids are playing in a well marked construction site does not constitute the "can't have eyes in the back of your head" defense, it constitutes the "those adults shouldn't be allowed to have children" philosophy

@Fred, I do agree with you about it could have been tragic, but the child who ran about 6 parking spots down to get the adult that was sitting in the car does not need a ceramony. He did the responsible thing after trespassing where young children should not be. The area is posted "Danger" (along with other warnings) in multiple areas. Shame on the adult for not being present with young children around a construction site. It is not a playground.

Great job by the kid who ran for help! This could have easily been a tragedy--excavation deaths are quite common. http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/topics/trenching/ I hope they give the kid a ceremony.

Awesome reporting. How old is the boy? and what kind of hole? Was he surrounded by dirt, concrete, metal?

Well, the way we witnessed what happened was two boys were looking in the parking structure and the one fell in, and the other child went to a parked car where he got an adult male for help.
