Bill Clinton to campaign for John Dingell in Ann Arbor on Sunday
Editor's note: This story has been updated with a statement from University of Michigan spokeswoman Kelly Cunningham.
Betsy Barrett, communications director for the campaign. said in an e-mail that the two would campaign in Ann Arbor but provided no other details.
University of Michigan spokeswoman Kelly Cunningham said it was her understanding the event would be held at Rackham Auditorium on campus. She said it is not a university-sponsored event.
Clinton will also campaign with gubernatorial candidate Virg Bernero in Detroit and Rep. Mark Schauer of Battle Creek in the 7th District, which includes parts of Washtenaw County, The Associated Press reported.
The AP said the information came from a person who spoke on condition of anonymity because the visit had not been officially announced.
Dingell, the House's longest-serving member, and Schauer, a freshman, face tough challenges from tea party-backed candidates. The 84-year-old Dingell, of Dearborn, is running to hold on to his 15th District Congressional seat against political newcomer Rob Steele, a 52-year-old Ann Arbor-area cardiologist. Schauer is fighting a challenge from the Republican he beat in 2008, Tim Walberg of Tipton.
A poll released Wednesday by Lansing-based EPIC-MRA showed Schauer apparently leading Walberg, 45 percent to 39 percent, with 7 percent backing third-party candidates and 9 percent undecided. The poll surveyed 400 likely voters in the 7th District last Saturday and Sunday and was commissioned by the Detroit Free Press and television stations WXYZ, WOOD, WILX, and WJRT. It had a margin of error of plus or minus 5 percentage points.
Bernero, the Lansing mayor, is running against GOP businessman Rick Snyder, who lives near Ann Arbor.
Democrats have also recently deployed Clinton to campaign for congressional members facing tough races in New York state, Florida and Nevada. He plans to campaign Thursday for Democratic Rep. Heath Shuler in North Carolina.
Wildly popular in Detroit while president, Clinton has remained a big draw in the Motor City since his presidency ended in 2000. He spoke at the NAACP's annual Fight for Freedom Fund Dinner in Detroit in 2007 and campaigned with Gov. Jennifer Granholm and Democratic congressional members during a rally right before Election Day 2006 at Wayne State University. His campaign stop Sunday could increase Democratic turnout in Detroit, a key cog in any Bernero victory strategy.
The former president most recently was in Michigan in July, when he stopped in Southfield to help raise money for Democratic House Ways and Means Chairman Sander Levin of Royal Oak.

So now you are saying it slows down the rising costs. But the democrats, including Dingell, is selling the bill as reducing our premiums. So which is it? Again, when Kathleen Sebelius, Secretary of Health and Human Services (appointed by Obama), acknowledged health insurance premiums will go up, but Dingell keeps saying it will go down, who is lying? When you add mandatory benefits that costs money no matter how many people sign up, premiums will go up. It's called common sense. You buy a vehicle for $20,000, but then you decide to add leather seats, upgrade the sound system, etc that will drive the cost up. It doesn't matter how many people are buying that car. It still drives the cost up to add these extra things! The difference is do you want a career politician who says one thing but his voting record is completely the opposite? For example: When Dingell says he wants to protect social security, but yet votes to allow the government to raid social security and put it into the general funds what are we to believe? His words, or his actions? When Dingell says he wants to hold the government accountable and live within its means, but yet votes to spend us into debt repeatedly, what are we to believe? His words or his actions? When Dingell says he is powerful and most respected in Washington, but gets kicked off as chairman and no longer holds any key positions and only brings back.80 on every dollar we send to Washington, what are we to believe? His words, or his actions? When Dingell states that our health insurance premiums will go down, but yet Kathleen Sebelius, Secretary of Health and Human Services, publicly announces that our premiums will go up because of the new health care law, and premiums are going up, what do you believe? His words or the action? Or do you want someone in there who has new ideas, wants to control the ridiculous spending? It's time for out with the old, and in with the new.

The difference is do you want your health care costs to go up 20% -30% or more or do you want them to go up 5% - 10%? If you like the 20% + then stay with what we have. If you want long term saving and slow down the rising curve of health care costs, then the new health care plan is for you. I bet that maallen works for the insurance industry because he's spouting their lies.

"Nobody who disagrees with the Obama administration's health care plan will admit that paying a little more for health care is because The plan sets higher minimum coverage. Your coverage might cost a little more, but the benefits will be better." So then, why does Dingell keep lying? Dingell on a daily basis says this will lower the cost of premiums when in fact it raises the premiums. If you buy a vehicle for $20,000 and then want to add leather seats, upgrade the stereo, you will pay more for it. It doesn't matter if 20,000 people want that too, or just one. The cost will be higher. It's simple, really. "That the plan is designed to pay for itself and provide comparably lower costs for generations to come," When Dingell conintuously says that it won't cost the taxpayers a dime for this legislation he is lying. When the government is giving subsidies, financial assistance, to help people pay for their health insurance where do you think those subsidies (financial assistance) comes from? The tax payers! "There will be more plans to choose from and increased competition between insurance companies." This statement has already proven itself wrong. Since the passage of this law, 4 carriers have decided to get out of the health insurance business. Other carriers are dropping the many plans they once offered due to the new legislation. People are voting for their own economic self interests. They see what a debacle the health insurance law really is. Geesh, when Kathleen Sebelius, Secretary of Health and Human Services, who is heading up this massive bureaucratic law writes a letter saying the law will increase the health insurance premiums, you know it is one big mess. Dingell now wants Clinton to help him because Dingell's own words and his actions are totally different.

Nobody who disagrees with the Obama administration's health care plan will admit that paying a little more for health care is because The plan sets higher minimum coverage. Your coverage might cost a little more, but the benefits will be better. The plan allows access to more people, (healthier productive people = healthier economy) Bigger pool, lower costs. No denied coverage for existing conditions or max $$ limitations for coverage. All of which are now the law. That the plan is designed to pay for itself and provide comparably lower costs for generations to come, There will be more plans to choose from and increased competition between insurance companies. I am constantly amazed at how the Republican puppet masters like Rove and Fox and the Koch brothers and several others have played the tea party and their supporters like a marionette. And I am forever amazed that these rich white men and their Republican party power structure are able to convince middle and working class people, who are normally thoughtful and centrist, to vote against their own economic self interests.

Hmmmm....I wonder why, if Dingell's lead is so great, he will need Mr. Clinton to come in on his behalf? Could it be Dingell's words and actions don't match? When Dingell says he wants to protect social security, but yet votes to allow the government to raid social security and put it into the general funds what are we to believe? His words, or his actions? When Dingell says he wants to hold the government accountable and live within its means, but yet votes to spend us into debt repeatedly, what are we to believe? "The Reagan supply side economics resulted in the growth we experienced during the Clinton years" Reagan's supply side economics or better known as "trickle down" left a huge budget deficit that Bill Clinton not only paid down but by the end of his term left a surplus for Bush to spend spend spend (2 unnecessary wars off the books and tax cuts for the wealthy and a housing bubble that burst) leaving an 8 trillion debt and a recession when President Obama took office. In fact, Reagan's budget director, David Stockman, the designer of supply side went on to admit it was an utter failure resulting in a mountain of debt.

Internal polls show Steele with a 4-6 point lead. Dingell has lost the blue collar Downriver vote and his only chance to win is to max out in liberal Ann Arbor. However, being that Snyder and Steele are both from the A2 area is siphoning away traditional DEM vote in Wash. County. Dingell is in trouble and he knows it. He could not even distribute his allocated 200 tickets for the Monroe debate.

Whoa. I remember things differently. President Clinton turned over power to President Bush with a surplus. Then we fought a war in Iraq, because Bush was convinced (possibly by Dick Cheney) that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction (nuclear weapons capability). Iraq didn't have weapons of mass destruction. While spending money on that war (some estimate it at a trillion dollars over the years) we had a tax cut in which the largest cuts went to taxpayers who earn millions of dollars a year. We spend more money than we collected in taxes. We went into debt. Bush hand over a huge deficit to President Obama. Also, during the Bush years, jobs continued to leave the country as more and more companies outsourced (led by people who got the biggest tax cuts and then got bonuses for having more work done by people in other countries who get paid much less than the workers fired from those jobs in American. Though the word "outsourced" doesn't sound bad, not getting middle class wages was bad for people whose jobs were eliminated in America. Thus, when Obama took office, we had an economy that was falling apart and massive debt and a record breaking deficit (an undesirable record). President Obama didn't make a partisan issue about it when he took office because he didn't want to alienate Republicans whom he expected would work with him to solve problems. But Congressional Republicans became the "party of no" and their strategy was to block him. That's why when President Obama made suggestions that some Republicans had agreed with previously, the Republicans dropped support even for ideas they had liked previously. By the way, those of us who care about health care, including a full range of care for women without Government coming between women and their doctors, John Dingell is the candidate. In the new health care bill, there's no government interference between patient and doctor. It's the anti-choice people who don't want to leave health care between women and their doctors.

This is a real sign of Dingell's desperation. When a 55 year incumbent has to invite the last popular democrat president to campaign for him, he is in trouble. Dingell has not been listening to the people. He has consistantly supported Keynesian economic policy that does not work. The Reagan supply side economics resulted in the growth we experienced during the Clinton years, with Newt Gingrich as Speaker of the House. Dems have controlled the legislature since 2006 and have promoted european style social democracy which is collapsing in europe. The riots in France are proof of this failure. Do we really want Dingell in Washington supporting the Pelosi/Obama agenda that has failed us the last 4 years? Failure should not be rewarded with another term.

What happened during President Clinton's admin, President Bush's admin has no bearing on what we need today. I wonder though, why Mr. Dingell is focusing so much attention in A2. $1 mill for a bus station, many million $ for the crumbling bridge, and now a visit by Pres. Clinton. Is his re-election at risk based on the votes of this liberally diseased people's republic? I hardly think so. I would think there are many areas between here and Dearborn that need this attention more. I agree thought that his time has come, long overdue. He promoted a $.50 tax on gas in early 2008. Good thing no one listens to him, especially in his party that demoted him, as gas rose to $4+/gallon by itself. No more of this tax raising disaster of a representative.

Yeah, the old tax and spend Bill Clinton. Well, there were about 23M jobs created during Bill's two terms. Only about 22M more than during W's two terms, but who's counting. By the way, the Republicans in Congress worked with Bill, didn't threaten to filibuster every bill that was being considered, probably would have passed the unemployment compensation bill without holding it up for a month and generally did not act like cry babies after losing their control of the government. Wow, how the mighty have fallen. Dingell is now resorting to bringing Mr. Clinton in for help? Dingell has no power left in Washington anymore. He is out of ideas and his debate with Steele last night proved it. Almost every answer of his to the questions posed to him ended with him saying we need to spend more money! When Michigan only receives on average.80 cents for every dollar sent to Washington then something is wrong. Dingell's answer? We are working on fixing that! Well, Mr. Dingell, you had 55 years to fix just that one problem, and you haven't been able to. It is time for a change. It is time for new fresh ideas and most importantly, it is time to stop Mr. Dingell's out of control spending since that is all he knows how to do!
