Arbor Preparatory Charter High School announces choice for principal

By Kyle Feldscher

The name of Arbor Preparatory High School was mistakenly printed as Ann Arbor Preparatory High School. This has been corrected.

Matthew Hudson, a former assistant principal at South Arbor Charter Academy, will be the principal at Arbor Preparatory High School, the school announced last week.

Arbor Prep is one of two new charter schools opening in September in Ypsilanti Township and is slated to be one of the few charter high schools in the area. Hudson has spent the last seven years as an assistant principal at South Arbor.

The school will be run by PrepNet, a network of public charter high schools in Michigan based in Grand Rapids that is affiliated with National Heritage Academies.

Dave Angerer, executive principal of PrepNet, said Hudson would be a major addition to the Arbor Prep team.

“We are thrilled to have Matthew Hudson as principal of Arbor Prep and part of our PrepNet team,” Angerer said in a statement. “We conducted a long and diligent search for a candidate who possess a strong, proven record in education leadership.”

Angerer added that Hudson, a former seventh- and eighth-grade teacher at South Arbor before becoming assistant principal, has played a big role in helping that school reach a high level of student achievement.

Construction is ongoing at the corner of Hitchingham and Merrit Roads, where the two charter schools will be located. Crews began working on the schools in the spring and construction is expected to be finished in time for school to begin in September.

The K-8 charter school set to open on the site is East Arbor Charter Academy. The school named Shawn Leonard as its principal earlier this year.

I agree. The reporter made an error in calling it Ann Arbor Preparatory High School. He should correct the error but, so far, has not.

Oh, please. These charter schools have records that speak for themselves. If anything, Ann Arbor benefits from the association. South Arbor has a waiting list as long as your arm. South Arbor will also have a new principal this year, as Tim DiLaura was promoted to a regional post. A small, selfish part of me wishes Hudson wasn't moving on (my son was to be entering middle school this year), but it's good to know that the new charter high school will be in such capable hands. Congratulations, Mr. Hudson!

I would not want to be sent to the office of a principal named Angerer, lol.

So South Arbor and East Arbor are also in Ypsi? Geesh! Get your own reputation already. How about South Coattails, East Coattails and Coattails Preparatory?
