Anyone looking for a way to cool off in the blistering heat will have to look elsewhere after the Ann Arbor Veterans Memorial Park Pool closed today following safety concerns over cloudiness in the pool.

Supervisor Dennis Simon said he noticed the cloudiness around 3:30 p.m. and it "came on pretty quickly."

Simon said nearly 300 people were in the pool when management decided to shut it down.

"When you have a cloudiness issue, it can turn into a safety issue," Simon said. "As a precaution, we shut it down. If a child or someone was under the water, you wouldn't be able to see them."

Simon said this sort of thing does happen from time to time and the best solution is to close the pool temporarily as a precaution.

"It's one of the things where you get so many people in the water and they have all of these oils and stuff on and they're not following the directions on the bottles," Simon said. "The filter just can't keep up with that."

Simon said as of right now, it only seems to be a problem with the filter and the pool should be open as usual Wednesday. People who were at the pool during the time of its closing were given a pass that they could use at Veterans Memorial on a later date or at any of the other area pools.

Tomorrow, the weather is expected be sunny and 94 degrees. For updated weather conditions anytime, visit AnnArbor.com's weather page.

If everyone would just take a good shower BEFORE entering the pool, we wouldnt have these problems at pools. Everyones always concerned about smelling like chlorine and shower when they leave. How clean do you expect the pool to be after a few hundred use it as a tub! (Long time pool worker in the area)

Abe, it could be....this reminds me of a sign at my friend's aboveground pool: to wit: "Welcome to our "ool". notice there is no "P" in it. please keep it that way." parents, please make sure your kids visit Mrs. Murphy before going swimming!
