Ann Arbor police release surveillance photos of masked gunmen who robbed Bank of America branch
• Complete story
Ann Arbor police released surveillance images this afternoon of two masked gunmen who drove a stolen car to a Bank of America branch this morning and fired several shots during a mid-morning bank robbery.
The images show one of the men jumping over the counter at the bank in the 3200 block of Eisenhower Parkway at 10:13 a.m. Police said one of the men was armed with a rifle, which was left behind.
No one was injured, but police said one robber fired multiple shots in the direction of the tellers. After one jumped the counter and grabbed cash, they fled on foot, leaving the stolen car behind.
They were in and out in about a minute, police said.
It's not clear whether the robbery could be connected to an attempted robbery in the area early this morning or a robbery of the same bank branch a year ago.
The robbers ran from the bank and haven't been captured. They were last seen in the area between Packard and County Farm Park, police said.
The robbery prompted several schools, day cares and other businesses in the area to lock down for several hours. Students at Pattengill Elementary and Tappan Middle schools weren't permitted to walk home from school today, and police officers were being stationed in the area as classes let out.
Both robbers were described as black, in their 20s, short and stocky. One was wearing dark-colored sweatpants, a light-colored T-shirt, ski mask, latex gloves and orange tennis shoes. The other was wearing purple basketball shorts, a dark-colored shirt, ski mask, latex gloves and light colored tennis shoes.
Anyone who has information on last week's bank robbery is asked to call Det. Michael Lencioni at 734-794-6930, ext. 49317, the tip line at 734-794-6939 or e-mail tips@a2gov.org.

@sk80sc, You wrote, "How exactly do they know these two are black?" What, do you think this was some conspiracy on the part of the Ann Arbor Police department and the witnesses at the bank to slur black people or something? Just wondering...

Allen School was on lock down as was Tappan, Pattengill, Bryant and later, Pittsfield and the Pre School. Please remember the schools take the lock down direction from the Police.

I really hope they catch these perps soon. It makes me very frantic to think of my child walking to school and one of em is living in the area. They had to have had help to get away so quickly. I do agree with one thing. Why was Allen school not on lock down? Is there something we do not know? Marine teachers perhaps? R Ah. Sorry. I really hope the police continue to patrol the schools to make sure the children get to school safely. I hope they head away from Ypsi. We might have crime, but at least our banks are safe.

Meg: Being proud of where you live, whether it be your neighborhood or your city, is not classism. Ann Arbor is home to folks of all classes from students (who are IN classes, lol) to business owners to rock stars. If you're not proud of where you live, then take a look at making a change. AA: expecting more from something is not improper. If I paid 40% more for my house and 25% higher property taxes to live in Ann Arbor, you better believe I expect more. When I see Ann Arbor consistently ranked in the Top 5 of the U.S. for places to live, college towns, or places to retire...you'd better believe I expect more. If you spent $50k on a Lexus, would you not expect more from that car than a Ford Focus? And does that demean the driver of the Focus? Of course not. But it doesn't mean that someone shouldn't be proud of their Lexus. Of course, if you're the kind of person constantly jealous of the driver of that Lexus, then that's your issue. Anyway, I regret even getting into this foray. Everyone seems intent on missing my initial message. I'm starting a program to fight crime in my neighborhood. What are YOU doing to stand up and let criminals know that they are not going to turn this city away from the great and amazing place that it is? I simply want to challenge everyone to do their part in protecting our city.

Amalie, thanks for the update. Eyewitness says he was also tackled, but I can understand why they wouldn't want to get into that. It's tough being a cop trying to do the right in a highly litigious society. So moving on. Regarding what the teacher told me, my best guess is the Pattengill teacher saw police questioning someone on the playground and someone made a leap to thinking a suspect was apprehended. I do appreciate your efforts to look into this, as there is considerable confusion among the Bryant/Pattengill parent communities as to whether people were caught or not, something we were all trying to sort through while calming our kids after a stressful and somewhat upsetting day spent in lockdown. We were all very impressed with how the AAPS district handled this, by the way. Excellent work and organization by the faculties!

Thanks Amalie for this update. That is what police confirmed with the district this morning. There was no arrests on the Pattengill property but there was many law enforcement officers on the lower part of the property.

(hesitated to say this in light of Stefanie's warning, but oh, what the heck.) I'm fairly sure the easiest way to rob a bank isn't to work in one--the easiest way is to own one.

People were wondering yesterday why some people in areas near the incident received phone calls about the event and others didn't. To receive emergency notices, you have to sign up with the city's CodeRED emergency alert system: http://www.a2gov.org/government/safetyservices/emergencymanagement/Pages/CodeRED.aspx

50c0++ you've been watching to many cop shows on TV. The photos from this robbery are not that bad. Bank of America has 163 office in the state of Michigan alone there is a cost benefit to the amount spent on video and other security equipment. This robbery was done in a matter of couple of minutes and this robber was a "line jumper"' he may have stolen the cash in two teller drawers. We may never find out the dollar amount...but the amount of cash from two teller drawers will be very low, not enough to justify spending an unlimited budget for "CSI" photos. Some of you reading this may say you can't put a price on preventing someone from getting hurt or killed. And I am grateful no one was hurt during this robber. But security equipment is only going to record and help solve a crime, not prevent it. Banks have had security measures for decades and it still does not stop morons from robbing them for typically $2,500. The best measure for everyone's safety in the branch is the training of the employees.

@annarbor, I don't know who you are and what you're motive is, but this is for sure--I will never, ever consider you reliable source. You don't know what happened. You weren't there. Amalie can't know what happened, she wasn't there. I am one person away from a very close, sane friend who was there, who called me shaking and upset. Why do I even get involved in these chat rooms with all the know-it-alls who seem to know everything from sitting at their computers all day, I have no idea.

@ Jernalytz- Time to find yourself some new sources... No one was tackled and no one was taken into custody off of Packard or any place else. And Amalie Nash has a far more reliable source than yours. Try listening to the A2PD traffic on the web, or on a iphone-like device. Far more reliable than second-hand info.

@sk80sc "how do they know they were black"?? Probably because they had photos as well as a bank full of witnesses, I would imagine. Just because the clarity on the surveillance photo's is not all that clear doesn't mean the folks in the bank couldn't see them.

@richard watkins "I am willng to bet before all this is over that we'll find out these are homeless medical marijuana addicts and they will be captured at the soup kitchen." Seriously? You're making a joke right? We've had our share of meth-heads & crack heads who behave violently, often to get their next fix, but just because marijuana is on the legal medical list (and still not proven to be physically addictive), it and all it's calming "mellowing" qualities you want to tie this to a violent crime? I am laughing as I am sure you must have intended this as a joke, albeit a lame one, but a joke nonetheless.

Of course, just because they haven't arrested anyone doesn't mean they haven't brought anyone in for questioning. The man tackled by police on Packard was undoubtedly brought in for questioning in relation to this crime. I know this for a fact. I don't want to say any more out of concern of violating anyone's privacy who was at the scene, but I know for a fact police tackled this person in connection with the bank robbery.

Amalie, if that is true, then I apologize for being insulting. As a parent I'm a little stressed that the information I'm getting is very different from what I'm seeing on the news. But I KNOW the person who was driving down Packard today, tumbled over the front of her car, and was tackled by police. She was interviewed. It could be he was a suspect who proved to not be related to the crime and ran, because, well...who knows. When I was at Bryant School tonight, a teacher came out and told me a suspect had just been apprehended on the Pattengill playground. She had been at Pattengill during the lockdown, and I assumed she got that information on the phone from another teacher she just talked to at Pattengill. You might want to ask the police about these specific reports. Maybe they can't tell you any more than "we have not arrested any suspects in connection with this robbery," but that is the information I have.

Okay, I'm getting annoyed with annarbor.com's ability to find out this information and/or the AAPD's unwillingness to release it. I know that a suspect was apprehended on Packard Rd. about noon today, because I know someone who saw it. Early this evening, a reliable faculty source told me a second suspect was apprehended on the Pattengill School playground, about an hour after the kids were sent home on buses or picked up by parents (and after they spent several hours huddling on the floors in their classrooms; my kid was there). Assuming these were the right suspects, folks, can we please GET SOME UPDATES? I guess this is what you call "community journalism." This old reporter, however, is asking you to ask some questions. There could be "damage control" efforts in place. Now if the annarbor.com staff decides to delete this message for, say, "unverifiable information" or some other such nonsense, I will throw up my hands and say, well, this is what we're left with, folks.

Stacey, if you read my initial comment, you'll see the use of the word "and." This is called a "conjunction" which joins two separate thoughts. In other words, I am pointing out TWO issues..."stand up to this type of scum" and "stop the homeless from accosting." Didn't you read that Ann Arbor is now the homeless capital of SE Michigan? You may have missed the article about that. And when my wife was recently accosted downtown by some homeless guys to whom she won't give money, I drew the line. Thank God I was there to put an end to that in fast fashion. Not going to put up with it anymore.

I believe the insulting ypsi in other comments on other stories has morphed into "ypsi twp" insulting and somewhat pinpointed to the west willow neighborhood. I doubt these thugs are homeless, if I were a betting person I would say I'd wager on they live at home with mom or grandma, who does their laundry, have a least one baby mama and if they live in ypsi it's really ypsi twp.... the cops always hold more info closer to the chest than we know about. SO, chances are these guys will be seen on surveillance cameras from a gas station or something, for some reason robbers always go to the gas station before or after a "job"

Good point. No insult intended. Both Ypsilanti and Detroit are fine places to live. Like Ann Arbor, each city has its own culture, dynamic, property values, implied level of personal safety, and crime statistics. My comment would have been better to say "you might as well move elsewhere, etc, etc." My intention was to elevate what is expected in AA versus putting down another locale.

If you live in AA and love where you live, then this is your wake up call. If we're not careful, this is only the beginning. I live here because I love this city. Unless we stand up to this scum and stop the homeless from accosting people all over town, you might as well move to Ypsi or Detroit and enjoy cheaper property taxes.
