Ann Arbor bicycling club honoring officer who saved crash victim
An Ann Arbor bicycling club will present Washtenaw County Court Officer Joe LaFerier with an award Wednesday for saving the life of a bicyclist left lying in a ditch last month following a hit-and-run accident.
The Ann Arbor Bicycle Touring Society is recognizing the actions LaFerier took March 13 to save the life of 61-year-old William Pidgeon of Ann Arbor, a longtime member of the club.
LeFerier was driving home at dusk that day, returning from a meeting at sheriff's department headquarters, when he saw bicycle parts scattered in the southbound lane of Dixboro Road in Ann Arbor Township. He immediately called 911, reporting that there was an accident, even though he didn't see a victim or any cars in the area.
As LaFerier turned and drove south on Dixboro, he saw an injured man — Pidgeon — lying on his back, attempting to get out of a ditch several feet from the road.
"LaFerier called 911 and gave immediate first aid, stabilizing Pidgeon until EMS arrived on the scene. His quick and decisive actions are credited with saving Pidgeon’s life. In addition, with Pidgeon’s help in identifying the vehicle which struck him, Cpl. LaFerier was able to alert area police who identified the vehicle, stopping and apprehending the driver," the club said in a news release.
A 44-year-old Ann Arbor woman has been charged in the crash.
The presentation of the Good Samaritan Award will be made by Doug Tidd, president of the club, at 6 p.m. at the Zal Gaz Grotto, 2070 W. Stadium Boulevard, Ann Arbor.
