Ann Arbor and Scio townships to split cost of Maple Road improvements

By Lisa Allmendinger

Ann Arbor and Scio townships have combined resources for about $100,000 in improvements to Maple Road through agreements with the Washtenaw County Road Commission.

The project extends from Stein to 400 feet of Joy Road and includes tree removal, ditching, berm removal and shaping of the existing limestone surface, as well as dust control.

The townships will equally split the costs of the road work, which amounts to about $51,350 each.

The Scio Township cost is reduced to $44,200 thanks to about $7,160 in Road Commission matching funds.

“I’d like to commend Jim Harmon (director of operations) for all his hard work on this cooperative agreement that will make a substantial improvement to Maple Road south of Stein Road,” said Steve Puuri, commission managing director.

He said he hopes to go back to the townships next year to complete the southern portion of the road.

An additional agreement with Scio Township was also approved Tuesday afternoon at the regular Road Commission board meeting. The township agreed to about $25,200 in dust control for all certified gravel and limestone roads in the township.

A date for the road work has not been set.

The roads will receive two applications and the township will pay about $12,600, after using about the same amount in Road Commission matching funds.

Joy Road is NORTH of Stein Road, not south of it.

The Road Commission needs to take care of the water problem south of the 4400 block; the culvert there isn't being maintained, causing the deep ruts that periodically appear and water from the man-made creek is eating away at the ground in the 4600 block, causing a basement to flood once. Resurfacing only treats the symptoms.

Can we now consider Liberty Rd between Zeeb and Parker a candidate for improvement?
