A year in photos through photographer Daniel Brenner's eyes

By Daniel Brenner

It's been nearly a year since I started work at the AnnArbor.com office. Four hundred and eighty-four assignments and thousands of pictures later, my internship has concluded.

Through invaluable experiences and collaboration with the helpful, experienced staff, I am confident I'm leaving with a much better head on my shoulders. I truly feel my pictures and reporting are more thoughtful, relevant, and mature than when I arrived.

While I was a part of the AnnArbor.com team, I’ve covered Michigan athletics, documented a high school brawl and climbed a 164-foot crane to photograph a rescue simulation. I have prided myself on finding intriguing angles and shooting behind the scenes.

Inevitably, I will mostly miss the warm local hospitality on the streets. Ann Arbor is a one-of-a-kind town with even more special happenings and people. I will miss it all.

You should check into this product for tricks with photography. I personally used it myself actually and it's pretty interesting. Click Here.

Great photos, Dan! You have really honed your ability to capture photographic moments in compositionally compelling ways. I'm especially a fan of the Demetrius Sims photo. Also, and maybe this is because I'm a former Michigan Marching Band nerd, but I really like the perspective of Prof. Boerma directing with only his arm visible, matching the movement of structure of the platform. Good luck with all of your photo endeavors!

We are certainly going to miss Dan around the office! Not only is he a talented shooter, but he has a great attitude and work ethic. One of my favorite images in the gallery is the aerial shot looking over Crisler as Michigan basketball warms up before a game. It's a great perspective (one I'll probably never get seeing as the catwalk at Crisler renders my nerves useless) and there is so much to look at in the frame. Great work, Dan. I can't wait to see what you do out west!

What an incredible collection of photos! Your angling on each is well chosen. Which of the collection is your favorite?

Thanks for the comments, critiques, and compliments. It was a fantastic year and Ann Arbor granted me plenty of opportunities to capture story-telling images and grow as a photographer. It should also be mentioned that the Ann Arbor sunset picture should not be held to the strictest journalistic standards. It is a HDR image with added saturation. I have accepted a full time job in Wyoming at the News Record and am very excited to start work. There is no doubt in my mind that my training and and experiences at AnnArbor.com have fully prepared me for this situation. I will truly miss my colleagues, friends, and the life of the city.

Dan, you're a terrific photographer, with a great grasp of photo artistry, but what I've always loved about your pictures is your knack for using the visual to find a different way to tell the story. Best of luck to you in your career-

Hi daniel - agreed with others that your work is at a pro level. Also want to mention that my kids are cute enough that you shot them a couple times while you were here; you were professional in person as well. best.

Great work! My favorites are the city at sunset, and catching the football melee; although several others are top notch. Sadly, though - I'd ask if there is still a market for news photographers? Thought everyone had morphed into "Multimedia Journalists," or whatever term is in fashion to denote low-paid, one-man-bands.

Hi Doug, you make a good and highly controversial point. It's no secret the industry is struggling. It's apparent in the vast layoffs around the county. Personally, I think news photography will always be necessary. Whether it's on the front page of a newspaper, online websites, or through social media. Photographs add a great deal of emotion and authenticity to any story, and can't and will not be provided through i-phoneology. I think if you asked any shooter, the majority of them would say they create multimedia stories on a regular basis. But many would probably still prefer to be considered a news photographer. Just ask Melanie Maxwell!

You're an intern? I would not have known. You've done good work. Photojournalism, as I'm sure you know, is going through a depression. There is little appreciation from management whose primary concern is making money. Best of luck. Annarbor.com is lucky to have an intern of your quality and a photographer like Melanie Maxwell.
