A guide to 9/11 memorial events in the area
Remember those who perished 10 years ago on 9/11 and honor those who serve and protect us today by writing a tribute message on commemorative banners to be displayed at the Metroparks. One banner will be sent overseas to our troops, while the others will be given to Michigan military, police and firefighters. In the area: Hudson Mills Metropark, 8801 North Territorial Road, Dexter. Saturday & Sunday, September 10 and 11. Kensington Metropark, 2240 W. Buno Road, Milford. At the Astronomy at the Beach Event. Friday & Saturday, September 9 and 10 at 6 p.m. to midnight.

Muehlig Funeral Chapel will display a wall of remembrance dedicated to the victims of Sept. 11. A 24-foot-long, four-foot-high wall listing the names of those who perished in the tragedy 10 years ago will be on display until Saturday, Sept. 24. Free. Muehlig is at 403 South Fourth Ave.,

The City of Ann Arbor Fire and Police Service Personnel will hold a "Memorial Service" on the 10th anniversary of 9/11 on Sunday in front of Fire Station One and the Justice Center building. 8:30 to 9:15 a.m. The Ann Arbor fire and police chiefs, along with Mayor Hieftje, will speak at the service. During the service, Fifth Ave. between Ann St. and Huron St. will be closed to traffic. The memorial will be held at 301 E. Huron St.
The City of Ann Arbor Natural Area Preservation has four "Day of Service and Remembrance" events organized for Sunday. The events are: Bird Hills Nature Area, 9:00 a.m. to noon. Meet at the Beechwood entrance off of Sunset Rd. Activities will include trail maintenance and spreading wood chips. Dicken Woods Nature Area, 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 pm. Meet at the end of Dicken Dr. off S. Maple Rd. Activities will include planting trees and removing invasive shrubs. Cedar Bend Nature Area, 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Meet at the Island Park parking lot, at the end of Island Dr. Activities will include trail maintenance and removing invasive shrubs. Miller Nature Area, 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Meet at the Arborview Blvd. entrance, just east of Wildwood Ave. Activities will include removing invasive shrubs.
The public is invited to a day of service on Sunday. 2 to 5 p.m. Sign-in begins at 1:45 p.m. Projects include service for veterans, ecological restoration and support for Iraqi refugees. Concluding the day of service, there will be a family-friendly community commemoration ceremony beginning at 5:30pm at Gallup Park, south of the river near the east end of Gallup Park Road, follow the signs. Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 310 will be holding their “9th annual Support Our Troops Fundraiser” at the VFW Post 423. Noon to 4 p.m. Enjoy a pork dinner with all the trimmings, entertainment and a silent auction. Rain or shine. Buy tickets at the gate $10/adults, $5/ for ages 6 to 12. Free for ages 5 and under. All proceeds go to support our troops in Afghanistan and Iraq.The VFW is at 3230 Wagner Road, Ann Arbor.
St. Andrew's United Church of Christ in Dexter will hold a special worship service commemorating the anniversary. 10 a.m. Several firemen from Dexter travelled to New York following the attack to help out. They will receive a special recognition. There will be a free pancake breakfast following. Firefighters, police and EMT's and their families in the area are being invited to attend the service and meal. St. Andrew’s is at 7610 Ann Arbor Street, Dexter.
A special ceremony to mark the 10th anniversary of September 11th will be held at the Pittsfield Township Hall on Sunday. 9:30 a.m. Join them in honoring those who answered the call on that fateful day ten years ago. We will gather at 9:30 a.m. Free. The PTH is at 6201 W. Michigan Avenue, Saline. 734-822-4921.

U-M Basement Arts will perform “Fear and Faith: 10 Years After 9/11” on Sunday at the Walgreen Drama Center Studio 1. 7 p.m. The show will be a mixture of scenes, monologues, songs and film clips. Free. The Studio is at 1226 Murfin Ave. basement.studentorgs.umich.edu/
Eastern Michigan University will host a “9/11 Memorial Event“ on Sunday at Pease Park. 2:30 p.m. The event will take place at the site of the University’s new 9/11 memorial, which features a 14 ft., 6,800 lb. steel beam from the World Trade Center. Cong. John Dingell will be among the speakers. Pease Park is located on the EMU campus, on the south side of Pease Auditorium next to Cross St., between College Pl. and Perrin St., Ypsilanti.
The University of Michigan is planning an "Evening Ceremony" on Sunday that will take place in the Diag. 8 p.m. The ceremony will consist of a few speakers from various campus communities, a moment of silence and a candlelight vigil. There will also be a capella groups performing and a flag ceremony. Free. The Diag is located on the U-M central campus, near State St. and S. University Ave.

Annarbor.com, can you please post about the fire truck on US-23 and Plymouth Road? It is small compared to these events but it is certainly news-worthy.
