2 injured in Monday motorcycle crash in serious but stable condition

By Kyle Feldscher

The man and woman injured Monday when the motorcycle they were riding crashed into a Toyota Prius were in serious but stable condition as of Monday night.

Emergency crews were dispatched at 12:47 p.m. Monday to the intersection of Huron River Drive and Loch Alpine Drive. Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Geoffrey Fox said the crash took place when the woman driving the Prius pulled out in front of the motorcycle, attempting to make a left turn from Loch Alpine onto Huron River Drive.

Fox said there was not enough time for the westbound motorcycle to avoid the crash and the two people on the motorcycle were tossed during the collision.

The 22-year-old man driving the motorcycle ended up on the hood of the Prius and the woman ended up on the pavement, Fox said. The man is originally from Georgia but is temporarily living in the area and the woman is from Albion, but also is temporarily living in the area.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing, Fox said.

“They are doing followup today with the elderly driver,” Fox said. “I don’t believe any citations were issued yesterday.”

The age of the woman driving the Prius was not immediately available.

Both people on the motorcycle were wearing helmets. Fox said they were in serious, but stable, condition Monday night and a status update had not come in for Tuesday.

Both the man and the woman had surgery Monday. Fox said he didn’t know what kind of surgery the pair needed. They're both being treated at University of Michigan Hospital.

The motorcycle was traveling the speed limit, Fox said.

“There’s no indication the motorcycle did anything wrong,” he said.

No one stops at stop signs it seems. The cops don't police it either....even if you call them to let them know drivers are running stop signs in your neighborhood. And if they do show up they park a squad car right in front of the stop sign. Distracted and law breaking drivers are killing and maiming innocent people and are more dangerous than drunk drivers but the money for the police is in drunk drivers. And they don't know the age of the driver? So the cop didn't check to see if she even had a license? Maybe the cop was a former student and she was a former teacher. Ann Arbor, where selective law enforcement prevails.

To most people stop signs have become "Look at the traffic you should wait for, see that they see you and pullout anyway" signs. You may think I'm exaggerating but look next time it happens to you, and you will see. This person obviously did not know how to stop, look, look again and then go. They should be cited, they were in the wrong.

They should be cited ? You must mean she should be cited. You make it sound like the MC riders need a ticket.

I live just down the road from Loch Alpine in the Delhi area. I take Huron River Drive to work and pass Loch Alpine everyday. Almost ever morning someone will pull out of that sub division in front of me (it doesn't matter which entrance/exit either), they do it from both locations. They just "ROLL ON THROUGH"... never stopping at the stop sign and most of the time time, only barely looking after they have realized they have almost hit an oncoming car. They pull out of those driveways LEFT and RIGHT without stopping. It's not just the teen or young drivers either!! I have had people of all ages pull out of there the same way.... not stopping at all and looking only after they have narrowly made it onto HR Drive! As usual, there is never any police around to see it happen, so no one ever gets ticketed. So this does not surprise me one bit the someone hit these people on their motorcycle. I hope they make a full recovery. And Loch Alpine residents, you need to stop at your stop signs before pulling out on to Huron River Drive! Next time I'm getting your Lic Plate numbers!

I agree but these drivers are so arrogant they think they don't have to actually stop to view the traffic. Cops should be on the job because these folks are more dangerous than dozens of drunk drivers who are at least trying to drive right. There's no money in it for the cops though like the overtime grants they get for drunk drivers. Not a questions of safety just money.

So glad to know the riders were wearing helmuts.

What difference did it make? You don't know.

Why does every motorcycle accident reported on by AA.com have a lead implying the motorcycle rider is at fault? "The man and woman injured Monday when the motorcycle they were riding crashed into a Toyota Prius were in serious but stable condition as of Monday night." You guys always phrase it as if the motorcycle is a weapon.

I agree. the headline indicates the biker was at fault. And no age for the Prius driver.......no drivers license or what? To think otherwise just academic B.S.

Kyle- I think you're wrong. I think that first sentence implies that the motorcyclist was to blame. I think it's interesting that you did the same sort of thing with the story about the 9 yr old on the ATV. The first headline said the ATV was hit by a truck. The updated headline was a little less sensational. To paraphrase: "The 9 yr old drove into the path of a truck". It sounds to me like something similar happened here. The Prius drove into the path of the motorcyclists. That seems more accurate.

notob- The motorcycle did crash into the Prius. That's a statement of fact. There's nothing implied by that at all, other than the crash happened when the motorcycle collided with the Prius.

I did not see it that way. I managed to read the article before jumping to any conclusions.

"There's no indication the motorcycle did anything wrong" and "I don't believe any citations were issued yesterday." Should NOT be in the same article... no fault of Kyle's, but the police... Charge her!!! She could have killed two people due to gross negligence!!

I really want to know WHY the driver of the Prius was not ticketed for failure to yield to oncoming traffic or impeding the flow of traffic. I realize its an accident, unfortunately in my experience if you don't make it sting a bit you will never get drivers to pay attention to the road. I am not advocating jail or anything like that, just a ticket, just a wake up call.

I agree with RuralMom. Drivers are getting away with murder as far as I'm concerned. My experience is drivers do not stop at red lights and stop signs and take the time to look both ways. They merely slow down.

The accident investigation is ongoing per the article. A ticket may well be issued after its completed.

"said the crash took place when the woman driving the Prius pulled out in front of the motorcycle, " Yep typical For car drivers "look twice, save a life" For MC riders. approach every intersection and driveway as if there's someone there trying to kill you. Be safe out there.

Unfortunately they do look out for things that are a danger to them (trucks & cars) The problem is they don't "see" that which is smaller or less of a danger(bikes motor or pedal).

How about every auto driver pulling out of driveways etc. act like there is a tank driving right their and looking twice before they pull out. Prayers to the injured riders.

The saying is drive defensively but if you are on a bike, drive like everybody is trying to kill you.

KMG it would be more helpful if people driving cages just payed attention. Here we have a woman that pulled out in front of the motorcycle almost killing 2 people and no citations were issued. How is that?

So true, and it does not even need to be people, aka, raccoons, deer, dogs, gravel/marbles in corners, etc. It detracts from the overall enjoyment of riding but self preservation is paramount. SIPDE: Step 1: Scan – Constantly be scanning ahead for hazards. Emphasis on CONSTANTLY! Step 2: Identify – Identify potential hazards quickly. Step 3: Predict - Predict what may happen with the potential hazard. Step 4: Decide – Decide your best course of action to avoid hazard. Step 5: Execute – Execute your plan to avoid hazard.
