Ann Arbor's 15th District Court opens in new police-courts building
The 15th District Court has moved to Ann Arbor’s new police-courts building — officially known as the Justice Center — at 301 E. Huron St.
The court was closed Monday and Tuesday and re-opened at its new location today. The court, which includes judicial offices, the courtrooms and the public service counter, is located on the building’s fourth and fifth floors.
Also in the building are Ann Arbor police services. Construction of the new building, as well as renovation work at Larcom City Hall, began in March 2009.
The following city services are now located in the Justice Center:
- IT services unit, first floor
- Police front desk and records, second floor
- Police special services, second floor
- Pistol registration, second floor
- Police administration, third floor
- Police detectives, third floor
- Police professional standards, third floor
- Police training services, third floor
- Probation Department, fourth floor
- 15th District Court, fourth and fifth floors
City services still located at Larcom City Hall include:
- Finance administration, assessor and Treasury - fifth floor
- Planning and Development - fifth floor
- Systems Planning and Project Management - fourth floor
- City Administrator and City Attorney’s Office - third floor

I'm not particularly interested in debating the need for a new city hall or how the money was managed, however, if you're going to build something of that magnitude, why build a monstrosity that is not consistent with or even complimentary to any of the surrounding architecture. A great opportunity was missed. I'm reminded of the sesame street song...."One of these things is not like the other. One of these doesn't belong. Can you guess which one is not like the other by the time we finish our song?" Definitely white elephant at its finest. How unfortunate.

I think it was a good idea. The police department was way overcrowded, the city likely lost Dan Oats over the issue of failure to expand and the city managed a viable way to pay for it. Oh, yeah, the 15th District Court was forced to relocate.

The Police/Court building was one of the great mistakes that City Council made. Mike Anglin and Sabra Briere were the two vocal opponents of the project and two years later there positions have been confirmed as accurate. I join the silent majority of Ann Arbor citizens who opposed this waste of taxpayer's money. Ask Voters First was right.
