The pedestrian island at the corner of Seventh Street and West Washington Street has a new pair of eyes watching it. West side resident and freelance web developer Wayne Eaker set up a camera in his window pointing at the corner, focusing on the sign in the island which has been hit a dozen times since it was first installed.

The camera updates every 30 seconds, and its quality should let you see the path of the next vehicle to hit the sign, but isn't good enough to easily identify faces or license plate numbers.

Edward Vielmetti looks both ways before crossing the street for AnnArbor.com .

@Ruth: Cyclists shouldn't be using crosswalks! I lost two teeth using a crosswalk on a bicycle.

Jim Knol, that hit shown in the first comment happened in the middle of the day (1:13 PM) - can't blame darkness for that. As far as pedestrian-only lights are concerned, some of the crosswalks in downtown Brighton have them.

The signs and poles on this island are not very reflective, do not stand out in the dark. It is not surprising that a driver might not notice the island in the dark.

This intersection is crying out for a pedestrian-only light. Does those not exist here? I haven't seen any of them. Pedestrians, or in this case maybe bikers too (Washington is a popular west-side thoroughfare for cyclists, and this is danger spot)- push the button, get a walk signal and red light for traffic. Otherwise the light is still yellow-flashing for cars coming through on 7th st. Or maybe the crazy drivers would just rearend each other and pileup at the light!

It seems like a lot of drivers prefer to make very shallow left turns, often driving into the oncoming left-turn lane. I wonder if that has always been the reason this sign is being struck. I also wonder if these folks are on their cell phones!
