Ann Arbor Open School hosts an 'earth friendly' ice cream social

By Lizzy Alfs

Ann Arbor Open School was bustling with excited students enjoying various games and food at the school’s annual ice cream social on Thursday evening.

Features of the night included a moon bounce, a game offering donated stuffed animals and books as the prizes and a cake walk.

The school tried to make the end of the year bash as "earth friendly" as possible by asking attendees to bring their own reusable plates and napkins and selling only aluminum water bottles. Additionally, the event partnered with Think Local First and sold food from only local vendors.

Parent volunteer Michele Fortin helped plan the social this year and said it’s important for parents to know school events can still be earth friendly.

“We’re trying to make parents aware that a big food event doesn’t have to mean using low quality things where everything gets thrown away,” Fortin said. “With a little effort we can have good food and make it good for the planet.”

Thanks so much for covering our event! Ann Arbor Open is a special place for our family, and we are so pleased to be a part of it. Not only does the program deliver an excellent traditional education to students in an alternative, project-based way, but it also strives to integrate the "outside world" and bigger issues, such as sustainability and support of the local economy. I would encourage any family interested in alternative public education to check it out!
