During a school assembly held on Thursday, March 18, 2010, students pictured told stories about how they collected money.

It's the single largest donation to date from an elementary school in Ann Arbor, said Mary Kumbier, development coordinator for the Red Cross chapter in Washtenaw County. About 320 students attend Bryant.

A group of students presented the check to Kumbier during a school assembly Thursday morning. Several students told stories about how they collected money for the coin drive, including selling cupcakes, emptying personal piggy banks and raiding their parent's pants pockets for change before laundry time.

Bryant teacher Louise Wallner said fellow teachers Jennifer Puente and Roberta Hayward led the coin drive effort. A large jar was kept in the school's main office, and children would drop off their donations daily.
