Michigan's Trey Burke named a third-team All-American by the Sporting News
ANN ARBOR -- Trey Burke finished his freshman season with plenty of accolades.
He'll open his sophomore season with more of the same.
Burke was named to the Sporting News' preseason All-American team Monday, landing a spot on the third team.
"Burke exceeded every expectation as a freshman, becoming the on-court leader despite the presence of other veterans," the site wrote. "The point guard averaged 14.8 points, 4.6 assists and 3.5 rebounds per game for a Michigan squad that finished in a three-way top atop the Big Ten regular-season standings."
Burke finished last season as an honorable mention Associated Press All-American, and also shared the co-Big Ten Freshman of the Year honor with Indiana's Cody Zeller. CBS put Burke on its second-team All-America list, and he also received second-team all-Big Ten honors.
Burke is one of three Big Ten players to make the Sporting News' list.
Zeller and Ohio State forward Deshaun Thomas were named to the first team. Creighton's Doug McDermott, North Carolina's James Michael McAdoo and Lehigh's C.J. McCollum made up the rest of the first team.
