Hype continues: Michigan basketball ranked No. 5 in Sporting News preseason poll
The Michigan Wolverines are a top 10 team.
The Sporting News was the latest national publication to give Michigan a lofty ranking Tuesday, slotting the Wolverines at No. 5 in its preseason Top 25 poll.
"This is the most talented team John Beilein has coached," lead writer Mike DeCourcy wrote. "He has multiple players with NBA potential, size up front and dynamic wings. Beilein generally has coached teams whose collective execution pushed results beyond what their individual skill level would have dictated.
"So what happens when he finally is in charge of exceptional talent such as Trey Burke, Tim Hardaway Jr., Glenn Robinson III and Mitch McGary? Raging success doesn’t automatically follow, but this appears to be a high-character group that will function well together."
Another national pundit, ESPN.com's Jay Bilas, revealed his unofficial top five for the 2012-13 campaign -- and he, too, pegs Michigan as the No. 5 team in America.
Michigan was ranked No. 5 in both CBS and ESPN's early preseason polls last spring, and Blue Ribbon sports also recently ranked the Wolverines in the same place.
Lindy's Sports slots Michigan at No. 3 overall.
The remainder of the Sporting News' top five was: No. 1 Indiana, No. 2 Louisville, No. 3 Ohio State and No. 4 Kentucky -- followed by Michigan at No. 5.
