ANN ARBOR -- One of the Michigan basketball program's most successful captains has passed away.

John Robinson, co-captain of the 1976-77 Wolverines, passed at the age of 56 last Sunday, according to the Michigan athletic department.

A player who started 79 of his 93 career games, Robinson finished his career with 1,052 points and 602 rebounds while helping Michigan go a combined 51-11 in his final two seasons.

During the 1975-76 NCAA Tournament, Robinson racked up 41 points and 32 rebounds in back-to-back wins over Missouri and Rutgers to help Michigan advance to the NCAA championship game -- where the Wolverines eventually fell to title-winner Indiana.

Serving as co-captain with Steve Grote in 1976-77, Robinson helped Michigan to a 26-4 mark and a Big Ten championship. The Wolverines finished the regular season as the No. 1 team in America, but eventually fell to North Carolina-Charlotte in the NCAA regional finals.

A funeral service was to be held at noon Saturday in Petersburg, Va.
