Upcoming plant sales help support community gardens

By Monica Milla

Lots of plant sales are coming up in the greater Ann Arbor area in the next month. Sales hosted by local community gardening organizations and garden clubs provide healthy, hardy plants, most grown right in our area, at good prices. The proceeds also benefit gardening programs in our community.

Upcoming sales include:

May 12, Chelsea Area Garden Club Plant Sale. 8:30 a.m. to noon. Thousands of plants available from local gardens: annuals, perennials, ferns, hostas, wildflowers, ornamental grasses, vegetables, and herbs. Proceeds support civic beautification, grants, and scholarships. More information: 734-475-9748. Palmer Lot, 222 S. Main St., Chelsea, across from City Offices.

You'll find old favorites plus a selection of new and unusual varieties. Plants grown by club members as well as donated by local groups and commercial growers. Most plants are dug from club members' gardens, with some donated by Good Scents Gardens, the cutting garden on the club's garden walk last year. Expert gardeners will be available to offer advice and answer questions about plants. Sale takes place in association with the Normal Park Yard Sale. In front of the Ypsilanti Senior Center, 1015 N. Yes, i was going to mention Matthaei as well. They have several plants sales in May, including a mother's day sale and one in coordination with Wild Ones on (I think) the 9th.

You should include the sales being put on by the Matthaei Botanical Garden which help support its valuable work. Here is the link to their website which has all the details: http://www.lsa.umich.edu/mbg/
