The intention to meditate can do the work

By Susan Scott Morales, MSW

I have found my meditation practice always has a positive effect on my day: people seem funnier, there are fewer “jerks” on the road, and I make fewer errors in judgment. It’s not that every day I have a deep meditation. Sometimes I find that I’ve spent the whole time thinking about this blog. But I’m always amazed at how even 20 minutes of meditation in the morning helps my day.

Try this analogy. You’re in the shower and there’s no soap, no shampoo. So, you just stand there and allow the water to wash over you. You might even be grumbling the whole time about how you’re not going to get clean enough. But what happens when you leave the shower and dry off? You’re cleaner. The water did its work.

For me, when I sit with the intention to meditate, something happens without my trying to do anything. It’s as if an internal shower is turned on. Even if I’m not relaxed and my mind spends the entire time writing next week’s blog, I still end up feeling refreshed.

As a mental health professional, an owner of a fitness studio, a writer and a wife, mother and grandmother, I have found meditation to be helpful in every aspect of my life. Let's talk...
