March restaurant inspection reports

Did you know Washtenaw County Public Health's Environmental Health Division inspects all food service establishments in the county, including bars, restaurants, schools and seasonal vendors? That’s about 1,110 total facilities! Inspection results are now published monthly on AnnArbor.com.

Why do we inspect?
Inspections help to ensure that safe food is served to the public. Sanitarians (otherwise known as health inspectors) use the Michigan Food Law of 2000 and the 2005 FDA Food Code when doing the inspections and are looking for critical and non-critical food safety violations.

How frequent are inspections?

Routine inspections take place twice per year, or once per year if the business is only open seasonally. Routine inspections are unannounced. Environmental Health will initiate additional inspections if a foodborne illness or other substantial complaint is reported.

Each inspection is a snapshot in time, and conditions found at the restaurant are not necessarily the conditions that could be found in the restaurant at other times. Sanitarians ask many questions about the menu, operations and procedures to get the best possible idea of the day-to-day conditions of the restaurant.

Critical vs. Non-critical Violations

Sanitarians are looking for critical and non-critical violations during inspections. Critical violations can lead directly to foodborne illness and must be corrected immediately. Examples of critical violations include an employee not washing hands before preparing food, storing food at improper temperatures and a dish machine not properly sanitizing dishes.

Non-critical violations may not directly lead to foodborne illness but are important to the overall safety and sanitation of the facility. Non-critical violations must be corrected within 90 days of the routine inspection and include items such as employees not wearing hats or hairnets, not covering food during storage and dirty floors.

Environmental Health responds to general restaurant complaints as well as foodborne illness complaints. During business hours, please call our office at 734-222-3800. After hours, you may visit http://foodsafety.ewashtenaw.org for more information or to submit a complaint.

I've been "In the Biz" for 10 years now. A Critical can mean many things, from the lightest of leaving the ice scoop in the ice bin, or having a dirty can opener, to the heavy, of rat droppings, to cockroaches. Non-Critical can be not having an "Employee must wash hands" sign in the bathroom, or having no soap there. My over/under for them both is 2. Under, I'll still eat there. Over? Well, I just don't go there anymore. Oh yeah, if you see a field rep from ECOLAB, ask them where they eat, and where they wont eat. They know whats up.

I also noticed that asian restaurants seemed to garner a disproportionate number of violations. I wonder if there is some commonality in the type of food or in its preparation that would explain it?

Maybe it is they donot speak or understand english proper.I just eat there andenjoied my lunch, i will go back for the buffet. The is good , because mostly asian poeple eat there , so they have a good and know hwo and what they eat.

Yikes... numerous Asian restaurants with multiple violations. I eat.... make that USED TO eat now.... at Panda House frequently.

panda house windows are dirty and you slide on the floor when you walk in there.So after seeing that when I went in there I could just imagine what the kitchen was like.Its no coincidence if the outer area is unkempt the rest would be too

Kristen, Can you comment regarding when Asia City will start receiving fines or be closed for health violations? It seems absurd that it is still allowed to operate—I believe their previous inspections have not been stellar either. To think that people are taking their children there to eat is frightening.

Washtenaw County Environmental Health (WCEH), through the Health Officer, has the ability to immediately close restaurants under certain circumstances, such as an imminent public health hazard. Examples include a severe infestation of pests or a sewage back up. A restaurant can also be closed immediately if the severity of violations is such that the public health or welfare is at risk. Neither of these circumstances applied to the Asia City inspection. As with all restaurant inspections, the majority of the critical violations found at Asia City were corrected during the inspection. A follow up inspection verifies any remaining critical violations are corrected and that the previously corrected violations remain in compliance. WCEH does have enforcement procedures in place to address recurring or chronic violations, which can ultimately result in closure of the restaurant. These procedures are progressive in nature and focus on repeated violations, such as improper food temperatures found on multiple inspections.
