A guided meditation on your highest goal

By Susan Scott Morales, MSW

This is one of my favorites because it gets right to the essence of why we meditate. We want to improve our lives. And we each have our unique way of defining what that is. So whether you’re dreaming of a house you build yourself, finding the right job, feeling content in a relationship, or world peace this technique will help.

The first thing to do is be honest with yourself. What are you dreaming about? Whatever it is, try not to judge it. It can be mundane or mystical. Of course, you probably have many dreams, but for this meditation, pick one.

With your dream or goal in mind begin to imagine that it is fulfilled. You have won the race, published your book, found the perfect relationship, or are free of pain or distress of any kind. Whatever it is, imagine that it is no longer in the future but you have it now. If you have a hard time believing this, then pick a goal that you do believe you can one day achieve. Again, imagine you are exactly where you want to be, with whatever and whomever you want to be with. If you like, fill in more details to make the experience believable to every part of yourself. Notice how your body relaxes as it takes it this feeling. Allow the sensation of satisfaction, euphoria or contentment - whatever you’re feeling - to spread throughout your being. Let go of the object of your desire, just focus on the feeling of having it. Take a deep breath, noticing the feelings and then meditate on those sensations. You have what you want. There is no more desire left. You are free. Meditate on the feeling of being completely at peace.

As a mental health professional, an owner of a fitness studio, a writer and a wife, mother and grandmother, I have found meditation to be helpful in every aspect of my life. I have a huge, new challenge in the work I do. This meditation was just what I needed to create a vision for what will be accomplished, knowing it to be true in a deeply centered way.
