Walk into Charlie Green’s office at the University of Michigan Golf Course and you have an immediate connection with the history of both the course itself and the whole athletic department. Photos, awards, plaques and certificates everywhere tell the story of Green’s 52 years working at U-M.

On Dec. 31, his last day as manager of the clubhouse, a new era will begin. "It will take a while to move all these things," he said. "But it’s time to go. I’m 77."

EMU is planning to invest around $1 million to enhance the Eagle Crest Golf Course

Tom Perkins | For AnnArbor.com

Eastern Michigan University plans to invest about $1 million to improve the Eagle Crest Golf Course several years after it invested around $2 million to renovate the conference center that is part of the Eagle Crest/Marriott resort.

The university recently turned over management and day-to-day operations of the convention center and golf course to Marriott, though EMU still owns both. Marriott has also recently completed updates to the hotel, which is independent of the university.

Funeral arrangements set for Tom Simon, former Michigan coach and U-M Golf Course pro http://annarbor.com/sports/funeral-arrangements-set-for-tom-simon-former-michigan-coach-and-u-m-golf-course-pro/ Funeral arrangements have been announced for former Michigan golf coach and long-time U-M Golf Course club professional and manager Tom Simon.

The 83-year-old, who continued to play and teach golf until last year, died Friday “with his family by his side,” according to a Nie Funeral Homes obituary.

Visitation is scheduled for 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Nie Funeral Home's Liberty Road Chapel in Ann Arbor and preceding a 10 a.m. funeral mass at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Ann Arbor on Wednesday.

Simon was the first head coach for the Wolverines’ women’s golf team in 1975 and took over the men’s program in 1978. He coached both teams until 1982. He oversaw the U-M Golf Course from 1969 until his retirement in 1988.

Once a student of Byron Nelson, Simon - who recorded 13 holes-in-one in his lifetime - played one year on the PGA Tour before serving in the Korean War from 1950 to 1953.

Unable to restart his professional touring career after the war, Simon served as a club pro at various country clubs in Southern California before moving to Ann Arbor.

His obituary notes that local golfers will always lovingly remember Simon’s signature critiques of their swings, such as “Maybe you should take up tennis,” and “With your swing, I would appreciate you not mentioning to anyone that I have been working with you.”

Simon met Emily, his wife for the past 22 years, during a golf lesson and they played together throughout their years of marriage and retirement together.

Matt Paterini shatters scoring record on way to third Ann Arbor city golf title http://annarbor.com/sports/ann-arbor-city-golf-championship-sunday-final-round/
Practice makes perfect and, in the case of Saline’s Matt Paterini, it makes for a record-setting tournament.

Paterini won his third City of Ann Arbor men's amateur golf championship in the past four years, breaking the scoring record in the process Sunday at Leslie Park Golf Course.

Paterini shot a 4-under-par 68 to finish the 54-hole tournament with a 12-under-par 204. The previous record of 209 was set in 2003 by Bill Lyle Jr.

“I was aware of the tournament record, I knew if I shot under par I’d have a good chance of beating it,” said Paterini, who won city titles in 2009 and 2010. “Me and my caddy stuck to our gameplan the whole week. We had a few bad shots, but for the most part we were able to play the bad shots.”

Matt Paterini extends lead at Ann Arbor city golf championship http://annarbor.com/sports/matt-paterini-extends-lead-at-ann-arbor-city-golf-championship/ Matt Paterini has plenty of experience with exciting finishes at the City of Ann Arbor men's amateur golf championship.

But if the 22-year-old Saline native can continue his current play, Sunday's final round at Leslie Park Golf Course would be considerably less dramatic.

Paterini followed his first-round score of 69 on Friday with a 5-under-par 67 on Saturday, giving him a 5-stroke cushion atop the leaderboard.

In 2009, Paterini beat Aaron Peterson on the sixth sudden-death playoff hole to win his first city title. He repeated in 2010, battling back from six shots off the lead by shooting a 69 in the final round.

Top contenders for a Sunday comeback this year include Jacob Sitzman, who shot a 68 on Saturday for a two-round total of 141, and Alexander Watkins (70-72--142), who is in third place.
