Jewish Community Center celebrates early start of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish new year

By Pam Stout

The Jewish Community Center of Greater Ann Arbor kicked off the Jewish New Year with their annual Apples and Honey event last week, according to an article in the A2Journal.

According to the article, the Ann Arbor event highlights the Jewish tradition of combining apples and honey to mark the sweet beginnings of a new year. It also kicks off the JCC's fall family programming year. The official holiday, one of the High Holy days in the Jewish calendar, is Sept. 9.

Roughly 500 residents from the Ann Arbor area attended the JCC's event, which featured games, inflatable play sets, crafts, food, and--of course--apples and honey for everyone to enjoy.

The article quotes Orna Angus of Dexter, to sum up the atmosphere: "We come every year because it's a big party with a lot of fun activities for everyone," she said. "And just to be among other Jewish people in a festive environment is really special."
