'In the pews' answers a classic question: 'Why Go to Church?'

By Darcy Crain-Polly

This week on “In the Pews,” we were asked a question by Joe Genau, from Chicago. He wonders the infamous, “Why go to church?”

As schedules get busier and beliefs seem to get more personalized, there is a notion that one can still have a faith in God that doesn’t suffer with negligent church attendance. Does that idea have any substance? What is it that we sacrifice when we don’t go to church?

Watch our video to find out more and remember to add your voice to the ongoing dialogue and questions!

Biblically, the church is the people, not the building. While buildings may make the gathering of the church easier, they are in no way required for a church to exist. It is important for the church to gather, though, and her primary purpose is to worship God. If a church doesn't worship the True God, there's no reason to "go to" that church.

Why go to church? To pay the ministers, the assistant ministers, the organists, the secretary's salaries. Also to pay for the brick and mortar, the gas and electric bill etc. How is that for a cynical answer. I used to go to church every week for many many years, even sang in the choir for many many years. Left the church for many reasons, miss some of the people for sure but I enjoy my sunday morning walks/jogs in the woods with God's creation as well. The peace and tranquility is amazing and I literally am walking in what God created. It also comes down to what good your tithing does versus giving to charities outright. Since most churches give only 10% of their income to charity work ( though they do many other good works) I also feel that my giving to the Salvation Army or the Red Cross benefits more people directly with my funds.

Love it! Love the idea, and the execution. But get a microphone closer to them - pin a small one on 'em, like real TV. Just using the microphone on the camera - especially in that environment - makes it very difficult to understand what they're saying. This is good stuff, though!
