The Ann Arbor Film Festival welcomes experimental hip-hop artist Flying Lotus to premiere a live musical score for Harry Smith’s 1957 classic of avant-garde animation. Flying Lotus, the great-nephew of the late Alice Coltrane, gained stardom from his bumper music on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim program. His use of turntables, drum machine, synthesizer, keyboards, laptop, and samplers have led Flying Lotus’ music to be labeled as Post-Genre or Experimental yet always stayed true to his hip-hop electronic roots. Harry Smith’s 66-minute long Heaven & Earth Magic is an acclaimed American masterpiece, completed in 1962, and known for its use of cut-out photograph animation. Experimental film master, Kenneth Anger (also attending the 48th festival), referred to Smith as “the greatest living magician,” before his untimely death from cardiac arrest at the Chelsea hotel in 1991.
