Water Hill Music Fest gears up for Sunday debut with special Vienna Teng concert

Vienna Teng performs in a special warm-up event for the Water Hill Music Fest on Tuesday. The festival takes place 2-6 p.m. Sunday.

Organizers, performers, volunteers and friends of the upcoming Water Hill Music Fest enjoyed a special prelude Tuesday night in the form of a concert by singer-songwriter-pianist Vienna Teng.

The concert, performed for about 60 people in the private home of Carl Rinne and Tamara Real, served as both a thank-you and warm-up for the festival — a unique new event in which an entire Ann Arbor neighborhood will host mini-concerts on front porches for whoever wishes to listen.

Teng — a nationally known performer who is living in Ann Arbor while she attends graduate school — played solo for about an hour. The set combined some new material with favorites like "City Hall," "Augustine" and "Soon Love Soon," and Teng had the audience sing along on a couple of songs.

Photographer Melanie Maxwell captured these images:

Although she lives in the neighborhood, Teng will be out of town Sunday, when the festival takes place. It's set for 2-6 p.m. Sunday (rain date May 8; watch the event website for updates) in the Water Hill neighborhood — just northwest of downtown, bounded by Miller Ave., Sunset Road, Brooks Street and the Ann Arbor Railroad tracks. Musicians throughout the neighborhood, both amateur and professional, have agreed to perform short sets at their homes.

Before the concert, festival organizer Paul Tinkerhess shared some new details of the event:

• Committed performers now number more than 150, at more than 50 different locations.

• Lawn signs indicating performance locations are expected to go up Friday. An online and printed program will guide visitors to specific blocks at specific times, and the signs will show exact performance locations.

• During the event, T-shirts will be for sale at the Tinkerhess home on Miner Street, with proceeds going to cover the fest's expenses.
