Tribute bands The Smiths United and Playground Twist to play the Blind Pig

By Ann Dwyer

England in the late '70s and early '80s. Gritty punk and new wave were sweeping away the glitter of the glam rockers that came before them. The Blind Pig will celebrate that era with tribute bands dedicated to two of the greatest acts to come out of it: The Smiths United, obviously dedicated to The Smiths, and Playground Twist, dedicated to Siouxsie and the Banshees, will take the stage on Friday night.

The Smiths United

The Smiths United play a wide-ranging set that ranges from The Smiths work to Morrissey's solo material. While Morrissey's ethereal voice is uniquely his own, Smiths United singer Christopher George does a quality job conjuring the dreamlike quality of the source material. Compare them below.

Playground Twist singer Erika Herron even goes so far as to dress up as the spiky-haired, heavily made up Siouxsie Sioux.

DJ Josh Burge will also perform.

Friday, May 31, 2013. Doors open at 9:30 p.m. $8/ under 21 years. $11/ ages 18-20. Must be over 18 years of age. The Blind Pig is located at 208 S. First St., Ann Arbor. 734-996-8555.

It's more important to ask "why" here. One Morrisey is more than enough.
