Tonight at Top of the Park: 'Dinosaur Petting Zoo' continues; swing music; and more

Tonight is Day 14 of Top of the Park, the popular, free (donations welcome) outdoor happening featuring music, movies, kicking back, running into friends, and a variety of other attractions.

Each day in cooperation with the Ann Arbor Summer Festival—which presents Top of the Park as well as main-stage ticketed events—AnnArbor.com is publishing a rundown of the night's happenings. Here's an overview of tonight's schedule, followed by a more detailed look at the events and attractions:

OVERVIEW

4 and 6 p.m. - Erth's "Dinosaur Petting Zoo" - special family performance
5-8 p.m. - KidZone - kids activity tent
5-6 p.m. - Retreat: Gyrokinesis class
5 p.m. - Roland Remington - fringe / lounge
6 p.m. - Hoodang - Americana
7 p.m. - Rampage Swing - big band
9 p.m. - Orquestra Sensacional - jazz / Latin
11 p.m. - After Dark with DJ Maxx Makau

ENTERTAINMENT DETAILS

Erth's "Dinosaur Petting Zoo" - 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.
A 45- to 60-minute family performance, held on the lawn of the Power Center, in which the company interacts with the crowd by introducing them to a menagerie of creatures and walking the various prehistoric puppets through the audience for people to see up close and to pet. Admission free; donations appreciated; blankets and early arrival recommended. Additional performances at 4 and 6 p.m. Sunday.

Roland Remington - 5 p.m. (Grove Stage)
Roland Remington plays mid-century exotica by artists like Martin Denny, Les Baxter, Arthur Lyman and Henry Mancini on vintage melody percussion instruments.

Band name backstory: Years before this was even a concept, my wife, Dorrie, asked my mom if I got my middle name, Roland, from a relative. She said I was named after my uncle, Roland Remington. Dorrie started laughing and said that would make a great stage name. Since the hardest part is coming up with a good name (that isn't already taken), I had no choice but to start a project!
Day jobs: private instructor (drums & percussion), drum circle facilitator, music retail, wedding band drummer. Have drums, will travel.
Favorite road food: those words don't belong together in the same sentence... although the Big Texan is really good!
Favorite stage outfit: the fez rocks

Drawing inspiration from the tradition of English murder ballads, hardcore American country music, and searing electric blues, Hoodang plays hard-hitting country featuring gritty vocals, smart lyrics, and gleaming pedal steel.

Rampage Swing plays high-energy swing music that has made them a favorite on the regional swing scene.

Band name backstory: The horn players have been playing in bands since 2007, and at some point Ryan dubbed us the "Rampage Horns" (perhaps due to the sheer intensity of our playing).

Orquestra Sensacional - 9 p.m.
Six-piece Orquesta Sensacional brings a vibrant, fresh take on the modern sounds coming out of the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and Cuba.
Name: Orquest Sensacional
Performing since: 2003
Home base: Detroit
Style of music: Latin
Members: Kerry Lundquist, Santo Rodiquze, Carlso Cruz, Eddie Carabela, Amando Lopez
Band name backstory: Sensacional stands for ...Arousing or intended to arouse strong curiosity, interest, or reaction.
Favorite road food: Fried Red Snapper, Fried Green Plantains and any friut from the West Indies.
Favorite stage outfit: One thing for sure, Orquest Sensacional will never take the stage with out Kerry Lundquist and his Panama Fedora hat.
Musical hero: The late founder / Bass Player of the band Bill Koggenhop

Tonight visit with Ann Arbor 107one’s Matthew Altruda, in The Roots Lounge, as he MCs the stage performances in the adjacent Grove from 5-7 p.m. After 11 p.m., stop by After Dark as DJ Brian Tomsic turns up the heat in The Grove and get your complimentary AnnArbor.com glow bracelet in The Roots Lounge.

Retreat: Gyrokinesis - 5 p.m.
Gyrokinesis: Movements exploring seven natural elements of spinal movement while seated (chairs will be provided). With The Movement Center instructor Wendy Holden.

KidZone - 5-8 p.m.
As described by the festival, "An interactive area for our youngest concert-goers, the Kidzone tent provides a fun and safe area for children and their parents to discover and explore a wide variety of hands-on activities with different community partners. From getting temporary tattoos, creating homemade instruments, or jamming out rock band style, KidZone offers different nightly activities for families at Top of the Park."


Top of the Park takes place in front of the Rackham Building on East Washington Street. In addition to the daily entertainment, a variety of local food vendors will also be on hand each night. the T Rex at the dinosaur show was fantastic! of course, i'm worried my kid will have nightmares tonight, but it was cool nonetheless.

The Dinosaur Petting Zoo is a show from Australia which is absolutely fabulous! My children loved it! If you've got kids or grandkids I highly recommend taking them to see it.
