The Cavern Club / Millennium Club entered the local drag scene earlier this year by way of a weekly Friday night series (with shows at 10:30 p.m. and midnight) called The Big Hair, Big Mouth, Big Fat Fun Show.
The Cavern Club plans to host a Miss Gay Great Lakes America pageant in September, and while laying the groundwork for that, club owner Nick Easton decided to gauge interest in drag shows and events within the Ann Arbor community beforehand.
"It's proved to be a lot of fun," said Easton, who noted that bachelorette parties (and in one case, a divorce party) have attended Big Hair shows. "People are enjoying it."
"Big Hair" is co-hosted weekly by former Miss Gay America (and Southgate resident) Jennifer Foxx, and Toledo-based Hershae Chocolatae, who appeared on "America's Got Talent." Three different performers from the Detroit area join them on stage each week, which Easton said "keeps the show fresh."
"Hershae performs back flips and the splits, and she really thrills the crowd when she does that," said Easton. " I'd never been to see a drag show before. It's mostly lip syncing, and there's audience interaction and dancing. It's just a lot of fun."
The series kicked off in March and continues May 3 and May 10, but Easton admitted that "a couple of (drag events) are in the works" for the Cavern Club's future.
In the meantime, Easton is getting used to seeing the tools of the trade. "One (performer) said she had something like 400 wigs, and I just can't wrap my head around that," said Easton. "And I've been in the dressing room a couple of times, Â and I was amazed at the spread of pencils and lipstick and glitter. Â So that was kind of an education."
