Young People's Theater prepares to share 'The Sound of Music'

By Lon Horwedel

The Young People's Theater is presenting "The Sound of Music" at the Lydia Mendelssohn Theater, Nov. 18-21, and a dress rehearsal was held last night.

The production, which happens to coincide with the 45th anniversary of the movie version of the musical, will feature more than 70 young performers from all over the area. The young performers range in age from 5 years to 18 years and represent numerous Ann Arbor schools and other school districts in the area and the region.

The Rodgers and Hammerstein musical is the story of Maria, a postulant who is too-spirited for religious life. She is sent to serve as a governess for the seven children of a widowed naval officer, Captain Von Trapp. Maria captures the hearts of the children as well as their stern father, and they get married. Upon returning from their honeymoon, they discover their beloved Austria has been invaded by the Nazis, who demand the Captain's service in their navy. The family's escape over the mountains to Switzerland on the eve of World War II is a famous conclusion.

Show times are Thursday and Friday at 7 p.m.; Saturday at 2 and 7 p.m.; and Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Mendelssohn Theatre, 911 N. University Ave. Ticket prices are $15 for adults; $10 for children and students 18 years and younger; and seniors over 65 years. It is suggested that you buy tickets in advance as many of the performances sell out. Any unsold tickets will be available at the Lydia Mendelssohn Theater box office one hour prior to the show.

Tickets are available at the Michigan Union Ticket office or in person at 530 S. State Street. Box office hours are: Monday-Friday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.; closed Sunday. They can be purchased by phone at (734) 763-TKTS. Tickets can also be purchased online at ticketmaster.com (service fees may apply).
