Picnics kick off back to school excitement
Several local schools tout the benefits of connecting students, families and teachers at back-to-school celebrations before school begins. Last week, the Bryant and Pattengill Parent Teacher Organization sponsored its annual picnic to build community between the paired school families (Bryant educates students grades K-2; Pattengill grades 3-5) and generate enthusiasm for opening day.
Mission accomplished, according to several parents.
Families enjoyed a simple meal barbequed and served by volunteers. The crowd devoured over 800 hot dogs, Kapnick Orchard apples, and ice cream cups donated by Cold Stone Creamery. DJ (and parent) Taras Palcynski entertained the crowd with family-friendly tunes while everyone reconnected with old friends, met new ones, and chatted with teachers and principals in an easy, casual setting.
"The kickoff picnic is one of my favorite traditions," said Lucy Braun, "and I'm sad this will be my last one," since her son will be a fifth grader.
Of course, Lucy and her son are always welcome to help next year. It's a community thing.

Bryant does such a terrific job with all of their socail events, especially the Back to School Picnic and 1st day activites. Thanks to everyone who worked so hard! The kids had a great time.
