Oscar roundup; Iggy looks to the hall; Alice starts strong; and more
Chris Pizzello, AP
Here's a roundup of some of the better Oscar links out there, while we all ponder how an industry that's in the entertainment business can manage to take an event that's inherently interesting and, year after year, turn it into such a gawdawful boring TV show:
• The official Academy Awards site is here.
• EW.com has a quick overview of winners and nominees.
• USAToday rounds up some of the evening's best quotes.
• Jeff Bridges finally won as Best Actor, and had some fun reflecting backstage — including a quote from "The Big Lebowski." Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Times took the occasion to look back at some of his memorable roles.
• Sandra Bullock was a surprise winner for Best Actress.AP
• The LA Times takes a closer look at Bigelow's win, along with another should-have-happened-long-ago breakthrough: Geoffrey Fletcher became the first African American to win a writing Oscar.
• Our sister site MLive.com has lists of best dressed and worst dressed at the ceremony. (My colleague Renee Tellez says Sarah Jessica Parker is on the wrong list.)
• The Associated Press compiled a list of "10 funniest Oscar tweets."
• The annual tribute to movie stars who died during the past year omitted Farrah Fawcett and Bea Arthur.
• In announcing the makeup category, Ben Stiller spoofed "Avatar."
• The LA Times has a good review of the broadcast, identifying pacing as the single biggest problem.
Whew. And now for a few non-Oscar links to round out the day:
MORE MOVIES
• The anti-Oscars, the Razzies, were also announced over the weekend, and Sandra Bullock won there as well (for a different movie).
• "Precious" and "Crazy Heart" topped the Independent Spirit Awards.
• Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland" got off to a strong start at the box office.
MUSIC
• The Detroit Free Press has a story in which Iggy Pop looks ahead to the Stooges' upcoming induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. A sidebar focuses on the band's second guitarist, James Williamson, who will play in reunion shows this year following the death of Ron Asheton.
BOOKS
• The Detroit Free Press rounds up some new books by Michigan writers.
TELEVISION
• The Hollywood Reporter says Patrick Fugit has signed on to an ABC comedy pilot that also stars Debra Winger.
