'The Last Five Years' opens at the Encore, and 'Crimes of the Heart' at Northville's Tipping Point is worth traveling for

By Carla Milarch

Welcome to summer — well almost! With Memorial Day weekend upon us, you’ll see fewer listings in general here, as the summer is considered the off-season in the world of theater. However, in Ann Arbor, a theater town by any measure, there are a number of companies that produce year-round, as well as a number of seasonal offerings and outdoor performances that will be cropping up.

This summer watch for openings from The Purple Rose, Performance Network, Ann Arbor Civic, EMU Theater Department, The Blackbird Theatre’s Shakespeare West series, and another West Park producer, The Penny Seats Theatre Co.

All the theaters mentioned above (except West Park) feature air-conditioning, and while you might not need it now, as the summer heats up you definitely will!

Fun fact: Henley’s most famous play, it opened at the Actors Theatre of Louisville and then moved to New York, won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, as well as the award for Best American Play of 1981 from the New York Drama Critics' Circle. The play also earned Henley a Tony Award nomination, and her screenplay for the film version was nominated for an Oscar as Best Adapted Screenplay.

*Did you know that...?: The performance rights to most non-public domain plays are handled through a few licensing agencies in New York, which subdivide into amateur and professional rights departments. Acquiring the rights to hot shows involves a complex negotiation process examining criteria like seating capacity, potential box office sales, length of run, artistic acclaim, and proximity to other theaters with pending applications, among others.
