Michigan Radio pledge drive sets spring record
Michigan Radio, the public-radio service at the University of Michigan, has announced it raised more than $730,000 during its just-concluded spring fund drive — a new record for the spring fundraiser.
The on-air drive ran March 17- 24, generating more than 7,000 pledges, including 2,400 first-time donors, Michigan Radio announced.
Michigan Radio operates as WUOM (91.7-FM) in Ann Arbor, along with sisters stations in Flint and Grand Rapids.
The stations saw a 15-percent increase in total dollars raised over last spring’s membership drive. A third of all donors pledged via the Michigan Radio website. The stations also received contributions from 18 food donors and the services of almost 400 volunteers who helped in answering phones. The money raised during the membership drive helps pay for programming costs at the station; member donations are its largest source of income.

I am glad the fund-raising campaign was as successful as it was, as it is a great station with excellent content. For several years, though, I have been puzzled by the lack of a publicly stated, overall, fund-raising goal. They used to state what their goal was, and periodically apprise the listeners how far along they were toward achieving the goal. Now they only announce half-hour or hour goals, with no mention of an overall goal. I have never heard of an explanation for their omitting the broadcast of their overall goal. Perhaps they don't have one any longer, or perhaps they do but don't want to discourage anyone from contributing as they approach their goal. If they want to raise as much money as they possibly can, that would be fine, as they are all contributions. However, I for one would appreciate some clarity about this. Other stations I have listened to have stated goals. I emailed them this very question, but (to date) I have not received a reply.
