Jeff Daniels earns Golden Globe nomination for 'The Newsroom'

In "The Newsroom," Daniels plays an idealistic television news anchor. The series is created and written by Aaron Sorkin of "The West Wing" and "The Social Network."

Golden Globe nominations were announded Thursday morning. Presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the awards honor the best in both movies and television.

Daniels was nominated for best actor in a TV drama, along with Steve Buscemi for “Boardwalk Empire," Bryan Cranston for "Breaking Bad," John Hamm for "Mad Men," and Damian Lewis for "Homeland."

Daniels has established an enviable Hollywood career while remaining based in the Chelsea area. His movie credits include "The Purple Rose of Cairo," "Gettysburg," "Dumb and Dumber," "The Squid and the Whale," and "Good Night, and Good Luck." He also founded the Purple Rose Theatre Co. in Chelsea and has become a successful playwright; and in recent years, he's moved into work as an accomplished singer-songwriter as well. He's even the voice behind Apple's TV commercials for the iPhone 5.

The Golden Globe Awards will be televised at 8 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 13 on NBC. Amy Poehler and Tina Fey are scheduled to host.
