Joe Reilly is scheduled to perform at the Imagine a Park block party on Saturday.

On Saturday, Ann Arbor area residents are invited to come to the “party over the parking.”

Imagine a Park, a downtown block party, is scheduled for noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 14, with "the commons" also open from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on the “Green Roof-to-be” of the Library Lot underground parking structure, located between Fifth Ave. and Division St., and Liberty and William St.

Attendees are asked to come with ideas for creating a park on top of the library lot. Music, food, stories, games, a play area, and misting water will all be part of the event.

From noon to 5 p.m., scheduled artists include Joe Reilly, Steve Rich, Five Miles More, the Dellwoods, Vickie Dischler and Tim Berla, with Will Hathaway as emcee. After 5 p.m., Paul Tinkerhess and Waterhill Front Porch Players, Muruga Booker and more will play.

Afternoon events are sponsored by the Library Green Conservancy, an Ann Arbor non-profit corporation organized to create a persuasively successful proposal to the Ann Arbor city government that the now-public land and space above the underground parking structure remain in public ownership to be developed as downtown park, cultural center and community gathering place. For more information, visit a2centralpark.org, or call 734-649-3207,

Evening events presented by the Ann Arbor Committee for the Commons, an ad hoc association of commoners, for community and consciousness, mutual responsibility and mutual aid.

I very much support building a convention center above the parking structure. Liberty Plaza is a green space and works just fine as such. Ann Arbor badly needs a convention center, not another "green space".

How many venues billed as convention centers have already failed in A2?

Today would have been a lovely day to eat ice cream on the "top of the lot" in a garden of green coolness. It was hot and it is going to stay hot evidently for the coming short term at least. A cool green space in the middle of all the concrete would be welcome to many people of all ages.

While people are pushing for more parks, I wonder if any of them have taken a look at the existing parks lately. Check out the lawn and flower beds at Vets Park. Check out a lot of the city owned property that hasn't been mowed or trimmed in weeks. I hate to break it to everyone, but parks are expensive to maintain and we cannot just keep adding them.

Right on! We have, what, 157 parks? Alright, we get it, Ann Arbor loves parks! How about we also like expanding the tax base by utilizing the area above a parking structure as a for-profit enterprise? In other words, a business that will pay taxes, not a park that will consume city revenues! Really, I think we might just be able to survive with 157 parks instead of 158.

How often do these artists use our many existing parks?

Cool. Glad to see the community embracing support of a green space / common area. Let's put a little sunlight back onto the darkness that is the shameful waste of a big-dig.
